Summit OptisparkII update
Summit OptisparkII update
Ok, I've been having troubles with my 96 after installing the summit optisparkII. It's been acting like the wires are crossed when any real load is put on the car. Fuel pressure is fine. Wires, and plugs are new and installed correctly. So last night I tore the summit opti off. As I took it off, i checked to make sure it was installed in the correct slot, and it was. So I put it aside for the night. Tonight after work, I pulled the cap off, and everything looked brand new. As I spun it with the cap off, I could hear I light scraping sound. The rotor wasn't hitting anywhere. There was plenty of clearance between it and the backing plate. So I took off the rotor and the backing plates to find that the optical wheel is scraping on the optical sensor. Upon closer inspection, the wheel and the spacer behind it are warped. Probably from the guy who put it together. So I started comparing it to the old GM opti. With the original GM wheel and spacer on the original GM opti, there is no scraping. With the same wheel and spacer on the summit opti, it scrapes the optical sensor. So I took them back off the Summit opti and installed just the original GM wheel, no spacer (since it's not warped like the summit wheel) on the new summit opti, and there's no scraping. The clearance with just the wheel on the summit opti is the same as the wheel and spacer installed on the GM opti. I'm skeptical as to this being the cause of my problem, but nevertheless it sucks. I heard a slight scrape when I first got the opti, but I didn't think much of it at the time. I wish I had pulled it apart then. For those who want to know, the main cast body of the opti, and the optical wheel are identical to the GM optis. The even have the same GM part numbers on them. The only difference I can see between the GM opti and the Summit opti is the color of the rotor and the plastic backing plate.
Re: Summit OptisparkII update
i would think if it was really a GM product that quality would be pretty good. i guess there is always going to be lemons no matter who makes it if it's mass produced. surely Summit would not use GM rejects and try to sell them as an upgrade for the LT1 opti would they? i've had minor problems with Summit and Jeg's in the past, but nothing real major and they usually make it right without too much debate over it.

Re: Summit OptisparkII update
Little update. I put the summit optispark back in the car with the old GM wheel, since the summit one was warped, and no spacer. The car is running great now. woohoo.
