Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
We have a 1994 Z-28 LT-1 Manual 6 spd,
We would be very thankful for suggestions of a good starter for it, I've had trouble for 7 years with starters, this last one lasted over 2 years, which was a relief to me.
The local Chevy Dealer mechanic, who also was my Dads Vette's mechanic said this make and model has had starter issues since day one.
5 starters in over 7 years.
I have snapped em in two completely, I have bought bad new starters, etc, etc.
This one, just slowly stopped engaging over a few days, now we just hear the solenoid engaging and spinning and nothing else.
I have heard we need a real good quality starter for the LT-1, we really cant afford a high high dollar one, but figured maybe someone knew of a decent one, Besides me just getting a basic replacement part.
I am looking at one online with a 5 year warranty for like 140.00, and they say if it breaks they will replace it, and will continue to for 5 years if other replacement ones they send break.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Yakster333/Kenny
P.S.- btw, I am sending a Thanks out to you guys from along time ago, when you all helped me bypass the Vats system, it worked and has been flawless since.
Thanks very much.

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
Any mods, specifically exhaust? If you've got headers, I recommend the Jegs 555-10001.
If you don't have any mods, overall the LT4 starter is a great choice too. At the parts counter just ask for a starter for a 1996 Grand Sport Corvette.

No need to spend top dollar
I used this one for years when my stock unit bit the big one.

If you feel like you have to have a brand name there is this one.

I like these open nosed style cause you can use the paper clip trick to shim them correctly the first time.

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
Well RamAir, lol
I started to change the starter today at 3 p.m., knowing I could do it in less than 30 minutes, heh heh.
Couldn't find my extension, and had to wait til my neighbor got home @ 5 to use his, and darned if I cant get the GS Vette starter past the exhaust pipe, and I ran out of daylight and the temps dropping here. And supposed to snow here tonight, and the next 2 days, off and on.
The $118.00 GS starter ended up costing 170 something, as they wont take the 94Z starter as for the core, lol.
He said I would have to bring in a GS starter to get the core, which I think is kinda stupid, but oh well.
He argued with me, and said the 96 GS starter wouldn't work, and I had him look at the 2 different ones, he said it mounts up different and everything, I flipped it over to show him the 2 mounting bolt holes were alike, and he said, oh maybe it would, but he thought it still wouldn't, As the way the open end is, I said that didn't matter, as the gear would come out when we cranked it.
So, I told him to give me the GS starter please, lol.
I told him you knew what you were talkin bout.He said well this one is a gear reduction one and has higher torque, I said, I know, and that's what I wanted.
It is so close to getting by the pipe, there is a bolt end with a grey rubber boot on it, with a nut under it, and that's what is getting hung on the pipe.
I think if I take the boot off and the nut off, I might can get it by the pipe.
Just today or the next few are not the days, my wife will just have to make arrangements to get to work.
I hate working on cars in the winter, lol
Thanks for the help, let me know if you have anything to add please.
And thank you so much again.
Sincerely,
Yakster333/Kenny

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
No speedy, misunderstanding I think.
There is plenty plenty of room for it, I just cant get it up in the area, it wont clear the exhaust, the little boot over a nut and wiring bolt, on the side of the starter, it's about a 1/4 of an inch more clearance I need to get it by it, I think it will, if I remove the boot and nut and the wire, until I get it by it and up and mounted, then I can reattach those, I am thinking.
Sorry for not being clear or confusing you, but yeah there's plenty o room up there, lol the starter is almost half the size/weight of the Z starter.
For a starter, this Grand Sport Vette starter looks real nice, lol
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Yakster333/Kenny

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
IIRC, when I had my stock exhaust I had to lower the y-pipe to get the new starter in. But if you can finagle it up there without dropping it, DEFINITELY go that route.
Good luck!

Good luck!
Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
TY so much Ram, I have faith in this starter, its so small, but so NICE... ;-)
Really cant wait to tell autozone dude, lol
I don't like people like that, they sell cars parts, and act like mechanics
, so my question is, why are they not mechanics? He could make better $$$
, lol U get and ty...

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
well, pfffft, I am not seeing any mounting at the Y, Our Cat. Cov. has been removed and the pipe welded by the previous owner, I guess, I will have to crawl up under there and see if I can get this starter up in there somehow.
Will let you know.
Thanks for the help.

Got it RamAir, Thank You so much...
Had to turn it 15 ways of Sunday, but got it up in there with No Probs.
Fired right up, Hopefully this starter will do the job.
Cranked in like 0.0 seconds,
Didn't have to use shims either.
Thanks again to both of you, and It was nice to meet you as well.
Sorry about the long P.M.
Sincerely,
Yakster333/Kenny

Re: Suggestions needed for a good starter please.
TY Ram, still got a frucker/Fam who talks about our 94 Z like a standard car, doggin what we put in it, but it rocks, and I swear, I been lookin at the flywheel, per 3 inch or so by 3, per the Fly wheel window, for 7 years, and ALL teeth are there. yes, I saw shiny marks, which tells me they were fresh scratches, but all teeth are there...
To be honest, I went out in the rain/sleet/snow 32 F. today. wind chills in the 26 F mark.
I said TY lord for lettin this Vette starter go in, I turned it a few ways to get it past the exhaust, and it went up there...
Then I came in the house, took a 2 minute break, smoked a cig, and prayed more...
I went hooked the wiring up, got one bolt in, then 2, and I called my wife at her work.
She had been crying, and was still,... I said, someone is here, and they want to talk to you, she said, "OK".
I held the phone out, and cranked it...
First, very first try, it cranked and started quicker than ever...
Thanks RamAir...
Sincerely,
Yakster333/Kenny and Lauri.
Lauri/Wife, who drives it everyday, said it started easier, and I trust you.
Thanks Bro...

Sure thing man. I just watched the A-Team, so I'm gonna steal a quote from it...
"I love it when a plan comes together!"
Glad to see it worked out!
