Stumbling on Idle and died on the road...

97-Z28 LT1 approx. 130,000 miles.

Noticed while driving yesterday that idling was "hiccuping" occasionally. At a stop light, the RPMS will drop "like a misfire" followed by a boost in RPMS above 1000 and then the engine will steady out again. (this happens occasionally so I didn't think too much of it)

This morning the engine just died on a side road while I was coasting downhill. No SES, just a check gauges light. Pulled the car over and it started right back up. Engine seemed to handle ok, so chalked it up to a fluke and continued on with my errands. (That's new behavior)

Drove all around town the rest of the day. No more engine stalls. Runs perfectly fine on the highway and has plenty of power. But when idling at a traffic light it *sometimes* misfires and lurches around.

Still hasn't thrown any error codes.

I replaced the opti about 4 years ago via the dealer (The water pump leaked on it and though it cost me an arm and a leg, it's a warrantied part and they have to pay for all future replacements, HA!) and have had a fuel injector go bad. This feels like another fuel injector going. (But I usually got an SES light after the second or third time of a bad idle in that case) But I never had the engine just DIE on me like that before and that's freaking me out. (And you'd think a stall like that would've thrown SOME sort of code...)

Any suggestions? (I s'pose it's probably not a "bad tank of gas" )

Stalled out on me again, so off to the dealership garage (in case it was the opti so they'd repair for free).

Verdict, bad fuel injector. ($335 including labor)

Oh and while they were there they discovered I had a front seal oil leak leaking onto the distributor cap and fouled up one of the spark plug wires. ($1800 to fix, fix leak, new distributor, new wires)

Wahoo...

Dude - do yourself a favor - do some research on this board and fix that leak yourself!!!!! $1800 is REDUNKULOUS . You could probably buy and pay someone from this board to install a new motor for that kind of money. OK Maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit but seriously...that's alot of cash.

i hope you havent paid that already. If you dont want to bother with it, get a local mechanic to do it. It will save you an arm and your 5th limb
