stumble miss: opti contaminated with KN oil?

I pulled apart my opti and noticed orange/red contaminates. I just thought it was residue from the radiator/thermostat replace. My buddy noticed the same thing on his opti. He figured out that it was K&N air filter oil. What is the chance that this is the reason all these opti's are crapping out and poor running cars? A thin film could screw with the sensor.

I was wondering if just squirting some MAF cleaner or electrical contact cleaner down the opti vacuum tube if this would help in some cases? get a glob-o-oil on the filter, or oil it too much.....

Todd

Not to come across as a jerk, but how would you get K&N oil on the opti?

I think he is talking about if the vented tube would suck up K&N oil.(assuming that the air filter was over oiled) I am not really sure if it could, but I have heard a lot of bad things about over oiling your K&N filter.

It can coat MAF sensor elements for sure.

I like to get my opti all wet and lubed up... oh wait, that's for a different forum.

yes, from the vent on the opti. I am not a rocket scientist, but... It would seem that small amounts of outgassing materials could affect the optics. especially in a relatively high vacuum. what kind of optical sensor is this anyhow?

Opti vent tube (suction side) stuck in ATI D1 intake. KN filter oil found inside opti internals, and, most inside the opti sensor compartment. I just cleaned it, and, will probably re-assemble and try it. What the hell. I think it will work. I will have to re-design the suction line fitting so this will not happen again. Altered (riveted) the rotor and... rotor living a long life with lots of MSD power throwen thru it. B. Hi Till.

Ok, sorry. I'm not real familiar with the vented optispark design.
