stuck manifold stud
stuck manifold stud
I am in the process of putting a new y-pipe on my car. While I was removing the old one I broke two of the studs off. How do I get the rest of them out. There's not a whole lot of room to work with. I soaked one of them with Liquid Wrench and let it sit a few minutes and still could not get it to move.
Thanks for any help

Re: stuck manifold stud
Make sure you use a 6 point socket, with extension and a breaker bar or pipe on the ratchet for more leverage...Odds are you will break them....Once you "break" them all, drill them out and use new bolts.
Re: stuck manifold stud
I broke all three studs on one side and the other side came off perfectly. Remove the manifold. Weld a nut on the side off the stud that has the most "meat". The best way too do it is too let the nut and stud cool. Then heat the cast iron flange around the stud, concentrating the heat on the flange not the stud and slowly work the stud back and forth with a wrench. I tried grinding and soaking the stud also which did not work. If you do it this way you will be able to buy new studs and insert them. If you try to drill you run the risk of not being correctly spaced and will have to ddrill and retap new holes or if you drill a thru hole you will need to grow a third arm to help hold the bolts in an already too cramped engine bay!Besides when those bolts lock up, you will have an even harder time trying to get them out.
Spend a few extra minutes doing it right rather than cobbling something together, you'll thank your self down the road.

Re: stuck manifold stud
I forgot to add that if you are unable to weld them at least take them to an exhaust shop. It is easy ,super common work for them. It took me about 5 minutes to do mine. Of course ,I weld and have everything there but it shouldn't cost you no more than 20 bucks at the most to have someone else do it

Re: stuck manifold stud
True, might as well do headers , your half way there. I broke mine doing the headers so I didn't much care. In fact, I just did the broken stud removal about 2 months ago. The manifolds were laying around so I did them one day when I was bored, its winter here, no car fun!!
Re: stuck manifold stud
Open the phone book and call the Welding/Fabricating shops. Most, if not all of them will be well practiced in removing broken bolts. You just put a bead on the shaft, weld on a nut and wrench it out.
