Stubborn Valve Lock

I'm putting some shims under my valve springs right now to bring them up to the correct installed height. I've gotten them mostly done, but I have one where the valve lock doesn't want to let go. I can push the spring until the valve hits the piston, but haven't been able to make the locks let go. I'm not really leaning hard on the spring compressor, for fear I might bend the valve or damage the piston and that's where my question is. How hard can I push that thing without worrying? I've tried hitting the retainer with a hammer to break the tension before using the compressor. It's worked like a charm on all the others so far. This one happens to be #8 exhaust, which is the toughest one to get to, so I haven't been able to hit the retainer as squarely as the others, but I could lean on the compressor pretty hard if I need to.

Anyone have experience here? About how hard can I push before something bends or breaks?

How about a socket over the retainer, then whack it. That has always done the trick for me

I tried that several times, but I couldn't get enough space to hit it very hard. Working under the cowl is a pain. I did finally get it though. I sprayed some PB Blaster on it and left it overnight. I was able to break it free today. The valves are all shimmed and ready to go.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Those locks can get really seated inside the retainers. Before attempting to remove the locks I give each spring retainer a slight wack with a hammer from an angle to enable them to release easier.

Yes....But I would recommend a rubber mallet. I also give the retainers a good tap or 2 after an install to make sure everything is seated.
