Stronger timing chain?

I heard that LT1 timing chains are kinda loose and not realy tight. When I install my cam I want to put on a heavier and a tighter timing chain. The LT4 timing chain seems like it would work. When I upgrade to this chain, do I need to change out the sprockets or will it fit right in and be tighter and stronger?? If anyone has any advice on what chain to use it would be most appreciated.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

Upgrade to a double-roller timing set and you'll be fine. I'm running the Cloyes set.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

If you go with a double roller you also have to go with an electric water pump.

Which you may or maynot be planning on doing

Re: Stronger timing chain?

I'd change the whole set myself. I wouldn't chance the sprockett teeth breaking...that's not good

Re: Stronger timing chain?

Cloyes is about the strongest you will find however it doesnt have a way of running the waterpump gear shaft so youll have to use an electric wp. Really the only option you have is the LT4 extreme or heavyduty but they are $200 compared to $70 cloyes and arent as strong. Also its best to get teh oversized crank spocket for a tighter fit. My friend run teh LT4 unit with oversized sprocket and hasnt had any trouble.. I run the Cloyes and no problems either.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

Is there anywhere to get a full kit of the oversized sprockete and the cloyes timing chain. I heard the electric water pump doesnt flow as much as the stock pump at high rpms?? If I went with the electric I would go with Meizer..but then I would need the Cloyes or LT4 Timing chain with the oversized sprocket? Can you help me find a kit for that. It would be much appreciated.

The cloyes chain wont fit the LT4 sprockets if thats what you are wondering. It is true the electric wp wont flow as high at higher rpm but when would you spend any significant amount of time spinning the motor above 3k rpm anyway? The main reason not to go with electric is b/c they go without warning where a mechanical pump will still work even with a bad bearing. If you went with the electric pump then theres no reason to spend $200 on a LT4 set when you could go with a cloyes that is a bit strong and less than half the cost.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

I have a 3200 stall converter as it states in my sig. so I spend quite a bit of time up near 3000. I would like to stay with the stock water pump so when I buy the LT4 timing chain do I get the sprockets as well and does it fit really tight?? Or will I still need to order an oversized sprocket? Can someone help me find a kit or give me some more advice about the LT4 so I can keep the stock pump.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

As stated, there are two choices. Get a traditional SBC timing set. This requires an electric WP and some grinding of the timing cover for clearance. Or get the LT4 "Extreme Duty". This ends up cheaper than the electric WP + timing set because of the cost of the WP. But if you want an electric WP anway, or need the easy adjustability of the gen I type set, then that is the way to go.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

The "regular" LT4 parts (as opposed to the ED parts) are as follows.

Cam sprocket #12555885
Crank sprocket #12555886
Timing chain #12555887

Is that what you are asking? You can buy them anywhere that sells GM parts.

Re: Stronger timing chain?

thanks once again. What do you mean by ED parts?? You mean regular as in stock LT4 parts so I am guessing that the ED means performance part?? I dont quite understand.
