stroke from 350 to 383...good idea?

i was looking at the stage 1 stroker kit from excessive performance

i was wandering how much hp those things make...they say they can handel 550hp...

im thinking about just stroking it out to 383 after i do the full exhaust and gears, and i will just skip the cam and get it later..

and after the cam i will put in a 100 shot in it
and call it quits

Well a stroker isnt gonna make much more hp than your 350 if you dont do heads and cam.....heads and cam is where the hp is. You need to do the total package if your gonna do it IMO. Do it right the first time.

Opinions vary on this one....Do a search for strokers.

Personally, I'd never build a stroker. Many of the quickest LT1 cars in the country are 355 cars. I've got a buddy with a 2 bolt main 355 with a stock crank thats running 10.35...With only a 150 shot. The car's been 11.4 on the motor. This thing has pulled a 1.43 60 ft. time!

Think about where you want to build HP, and torque. Yes, strokers are torque monsters....BUT....Torque blows the tires off when you try to launch it.

i've yet to hear a good argument for not stroking other than

"well my friend has a fast 355!"

(or obvious limititions in your racing class)

longer stroke- more vacuum, sucks in more air

you need to get more of a top end cam than you would in a 350 to get power up top, duh. you act like a 383 wont make power up top. it is in no way more limited to making power up top than a 355. hell it has an advantage. more stroke.

obviously if you put a cam in a 383 designed for a 355, its going to have the powerband pulled down some.

you rednecks from the souph are so stubborn

Uh, most of the fastest LT1 cars are strokers. Hell, check out the past 2 years of GMHTP. There have been many feature cars that runs 9s, all were strokers. Coincedence? I don't think so. A 355 running 11s NA is not that special. Run 9s NA like some strokers do and you'll get my attention.

The easiest way to make more power at all rpms is to increase the displacement. Whatever a 350 can do, the 383 can do better. As Trey pointed out, people with less than optimal top end horsepower from their 383 do not have the correct heads and cam to do the job.

HAHAHAH.......It's usually the guys who can't afford or who didn't do the stroker that says the 355's are "some of the fastest." I have never heard of a guys who builds his motor right that says.."I wish I went with a 355 instead of my stroker." The key is...like TREY said, need the cam and some good flowing heads. Then you're there!

Um...Joe Overton has the worlds fastest N/A LT1...And unless you can prove me wrong, he's the ONLY N/A LT1 in the 9's. Yes, Joe's is a 388 stroker, but it's not a normal LT1, or car. That little 355 is in second place in the EFA right now... ABOVE all the strokers!, and he's first in the P/A class...ABOVE all the strokers! He just won the EFA race at MIR a few weeks ago in the P/A class...Against P/A LT1 strokers and P/A LS1's.
Now again....Show me all the N/A stroker LT1's in the 9's....

Damn, Trey, I can't find a quarter mile time on your web site, either. I certainly hope your stroker is atleast quicker than my 95,000 mile stock bottom end 350.
