Re: stripped transmission bolt

Do you mean the head is rounded over or the bolt spins in the hole but isnt backing out? I had good luck with one of the sockets craftman makes for rounded heads when I had rounded flywheel bolts. I pounded it on and then used impact gun to back it out. If its stripped in the hole try prying up or wedging it over while attempting to loosen.

Re: stripped transmission bolt

They sell a few different sockets ( Irwin , craftsman )for striped bolts..If none of these work there is something called a EZ-out!! not so easy to use in tight places but they work .
I work in a sheet metal fabrication shop / machine shop use them all the time on broken stud bolts
hopefully the sockets work for you !! is there any lock tight on the bolts ??

Re: stripped transmission bolt

If it is rounded head and you were not using a 5 point socket that also could be your problem. Can try heating the bolt too(especially if it has any signs of threadlocker on the others)

5 point socket? Do you mean a star or are you talking about a 6 point socket?

Agree with heating it up. Make sure you heat up the block where the threaded part of the bolt is.

Of course this is all speculation since we aren't sure what is stripped.

If the hole is stripped, drill/tap for a helicoil insert. They are easy to use but you must drill the correct hole and use the correct tap. No short cuts.

Hope this helps.

Re: stripped transmission bolt

I don't think there is any way to heat it(safely) or use an easy out on the location he is referring to....short of dropping the engine and trans out the bottom.

As mentioned above, if the threads are stripped, loosening it while using something to get between the flange of the bolt head and trans should back it out.

If the bolt head is rounded off, you can try a smaller socket(try both metric and standard sizes) and make sure it is snug going on the bolt head. This must be a 6-point socket. Don't use 12-point sockets on a hex head whenever possible.

The other option would be to try and find a socket set for damaged bolt heads.....but socket wall size could make the difference as to if it works or not.

That is not a good spot to have a problem(difficult).

For reference, I think those bolts only require 26 lb-ft when tightening them. The bellhousing to block bolts are 30-35 lb-ft. I think its 35, but will double check later.

This is a long shot....but here goes..... there is a trans bolt at the top on the passengers side that has a bracket holding the vent tube. That bracket and vent tube will hold the bolt up in the hole after you loosen it all the way. Is it possible that could that be your issue?
