stress/reliability 355vs383
stress/reliability 355vs383
I was thinking the other night(scarry i know) that technically a 383 is less reliable than a 355.
For intance lets say you have a turbocharged 355 and a turbocharged 383 making in the neighborhood of 800rwhp.
383: Added stress on the crank becasue of longer stroke.
Added stress on the rod/piston connection
Higher piston velocity=Rings wear faster, rebuild sooner
355: None of the above.
I am pretty sure that these statements are corect, but is the margin so minamal that it wouldn't make a difference at all between the two? Throwing out all my options for my buildup and searching for opinions.
Thanks for the thoughts,
Tony

Re: stress/reliability 355vs383
statement seems correct here too. you've also got to remember that a 355 would turn more rpm (assuming both motors were built with the same quality parts). obviously, more rpm raises chances of more problems, so a 355 really evens out with a 383. if you remember the yellow "thunder chicken" formula from the magazines....i believe that had an mti built 396. they tore it d9own at 50,000 miles and the mti guys said it looked like it could have gone another 25,000-50,000 miles. so 75-100,000 miles on a forged 396 sounds good to me. : )

Hmm, decisions decisons. Well I guess I'll stick with a 383 not revving past 6,000 on a FI motor. This car won't have more than 8,000 miles a year put on it. Rebuilds will be few and far between. Just got to make sure i have quality bottem end parts to take the beating. Sound good?
