Strange Ticking noise
Strange Ticking noise
I own a 1997 Pontiac Transam With a Lt1 engine with 6 speed Transmission.
When i Start up the car every morning to go to work i hear a strange but anoying ticking noice. It really doenst sound as uniform to engine speed as valvtrain noice. but as i leave it idle and stick my head closer to the motor it does sound like its coming from the rear of the engine. Either neat the exhaust or under the valve cover.
Is it also a possibility that it could be some sort of exhaust material Ticking with another metal part?
Thanks
Just started at this forum, I love how it's setup makes it very easy to find or get the infromation you need.

Re: Strange Ticking noise
check all your exhaust bolts. It sounds like you have an exhaust leak. I had this happen. it would do it when the motor wasnt warm. Then once it warmed up it went away. I guess because the gasket swells up. But eventually it go worse, and it did it all the time.
It also wouldnt hurt for you to take off the valve covers and have a look, and run it real quick, to see if its that. In general I would say most engines will make more noise before they get warmed up. For instance, your lifters need to prime up, and your valvetrain sometimes is noisy at start up because the oil hasnt reallly worked its way up there. So it can be alot of things.
But I would start with the basics. And check all your exhaust bolts on that side of the motor. Then take a look under the valve covers. And also dont rull out the egr system. It is located behind the motor, and is connected to the exhaust system as well.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
