Strange rocker arm adjustment

I'm adjusting the intake rocker on cylinder 2, and it's quite strange. With all the other rocker arms I'd hit zero lash, then add 1/2 turn for my preload. This 1/2 turn usually requires a small amount of torque. On the rocker I'm having problems with it doesn't take any torque at all. In fact, after I do my first 1/4 turn when I turn the socket wrench back I have to hold the socket just so it doesn't turn the rocker nut back too. What's going on?

Re: Strange rocker arm adjustment

If you are doing everything correctly, it might be a bad lifter.

Re: Strange rocker arm adjustment

I must be doing something wrong... The lifters are all brand new, so far they've got maybe 30-60 minutes of run time on them. I had the heads off last week and they all looked to be in good condition. I'm following the steps on your site, under method 2. I've had the hub off, but I installed it in a semi-correct position so I figured even if the hub is a few degrees off it won't matter since the valves should be closed for a full 360 degrees of the compression & power stroke.

I also noticed that the poly locks for the rockers that felt loose have to be screwed down way farther than the other cylinders.

So far there have been 4 rockers with this problem.

Make sure the poly lock is seating on the correct (flat) part of the rocker.

Yep, check to be sure the rocker trunion is not upside down.

Re: Strange rocker arm adjustment

Maybe those 4 lifters drained their oil out and they are spring only.

Yeah.. take the nut off and make sure the trunnion is not upside down as said above (the surface the nut contacts is the flat side/ round side is down). If that is O.K. you may have to get it close and start if up for a while to let that lifter pump back up and then re-check once the lifter is pumped up.

Probably everyone has done at least one that way.

If they have never been run it doesn't have any oil in it,it leaked out setting on the shelf.
Just put your 1/4 turn in and fire it up,it should be OK.

Yea,I am guilty of the upside down thing too. Ya catch it quick though if ya have done it more than once.

Re: Strange rocker arm adjustment

If you put the trunion in upside down, the rocker arm nut will be sticking up higher by about 1/8" compared to the other ones, so it's easy to spot check for that.

Yesterday, to be exact. My valve cover hit so I had to look at it closer. They were all still loose, though, since I had just put them on.
