strange problem
strange problem
My car is stumbling and surges under light acceleration. It also backfires and bogs under hard acceleration. It only does it below 2200 rpms. Anything above that it drives OK, but it only makes power to about 4600 rpms and feels like its red-lined. Its weird because the car drives better with the O2s unhooked. The only code its throwing is P0336, crank sensor. I've thrown parts galore at this thing and cant figure it out. I'm almost to a point where I'm ready to sell this thing. Any help would be appreciated.
Yeah, I've replaced everything from the reluctor wheel to the sensor, and it still throws the same code. I have also had my pcm re-flashed a number of times and even switched to PCMforless and still drives the same.
The crank sensor on a 96-97 LT1 is only for mis-fire detection. It is not used to control anything so it will have nothing to do with your problem. Have you checked the fuel pressure? I would do that to eliminate the fuel pump.
If not that I would check into the ignition system coil, plugs, or the dreaded optispark.

The fuel pressure is good. I have also replaced the coil, and plugs. I put a new opti during the cam swap about 7 months ago, but I did try swaping it with the old one to make sure it was working properly. Still no change. I've also replaced O2s, fuel injectors, spark plug wires, MAF, the sensor in the water pump, fuel filter, knock sensor, and fixed some burnt wires by the headers. The wires that were burnt went to the passenger front O2, crank sensor, and the starter. I even took the timing cover off to make sure the timing wasnt off. I'm stumped.
Mine did that about 6 years ago except it threw a bunch of opti codes. Replaced the opti and it did the same thing. Turned out to be badly burned # 5 and 7 plug wires. Even though they were wrapped in fire sleeves, the wires inside were toast. The fire sleeve looked perfect from the outside so you would not suspect anything wrong with the wires. My .02 cents.
Thats something i need to do, buy new wires. I bought a roll of bulk MSD wire and re-used the terminals from the old wires, but maybe I didnt do it right. Another problem I forgot to mention is when I slow down in neutral, the car idles at 2000 rpms until I come to a complete stop.
