Strange noise when starting up...
Strange noise when starting up...
Hey all. I hang out in the forum waaaay to much. Almost posted this there.
Anywho, my T/A has recently (past month or so) been making a squeeking noise on startup only. Not a high pitch squeek. I can't really explain it. It happends just as the engine grabs and starts up and only for a split second. I've also noticed that she seems to slowly eat coolant now. Could I be dealing w/a blown head gasket? Car runs great, idles fine, etc. No strange noises when running either.
Thanks a bunch.

Re: Strange noise when starting up...
Have you done anything with the starter since your squeek showed up? Maybe the starter clearance is off to the flywheel? Take the inspection plate off and check with the paperclip trick.
As far as water is concerned, look at the hoses near the radiator from underneath. Look at the water pump real well while your there and especially the gaskets at the block. check the oil for water and the water for any oil or bubbles when it's running and the thermostat is open. Open the cap while it's cold and let it warm up with the cap off. Pull the plugs to look for a real clean one. If not of that shows anything, put a pressure test on the radiator.

Re: Strange noise when starting up...
The teeth of the starter when meshing with the flywheel/flexplate should have the clearance of the thickness of a paper clip. When one of the teeth of one gear is lined straight up with the valley in between the teeth of the other gear. There should be just enough room to get a paper clip in between them.
