Strange coolant leak

I was driving my car today and the power steering was acting up, pulled over to see the pullies soaked in coalant. I was somewhat surprised because I replaced the water pump last year and all the hoses seemed to be in good shape.

Is it possible for the waterpump to leak where the metal elbow comes out of the pump? It seems to be leaking there and a lot. I haven't had a chance to find out exactly where it is leaking from because its already soaked. I am If it is leaking there, is there any way to fix it or would I need to get a new water pump.

any tips on finding where it is leaking from, I dont believe this is the weaphole this time.

I was thinking it is possible that the cold weather had something to do with it, but temps havent dropped below zero yet and i have 55/45 antifreeze/water.

Put it on ramps, turn it on and stick your head under their. Well thats what i did, i'd say the wp went south on you. New wp would probably be the only option even if it was one of the elbows.

It is quite possible to leak at one of the metal pipes to pump junction if it is a rebuilt pump. That seems to be one of their caveats. I have even heard of them coming completely out. You will need to observe it under pressure to pinpoint the location.

if you did that waterpump recently, most parts stores will warranty it with a receipt.

Re: Strange coolant leak

I am so confused at the moment. I topped the coolant off, bled the system and let it sit in my garage for 3 days (every day i got home lately it has already been dark so I really couldnt see anything going on). I checked the hose connections as well as the bleed valves (tightened them up good).

I can't find a leak in the system anywhere now. Ive parked it in multiple spots on my driveway and moved while it was fully warmed up and nothing was leaking. I am sure the system is full of coolant because the levels are correct and the bleed valves are spraying coolant when opened. I drove it and never had a problem.

What should I do, should i just drive it now and watch it. Kind of need transportation so what do you recommend?

I'd start it up, open the hood, get a strong light and check all hoses, and all around the waterpump. If you can't find any sign of a leak, go ahead and drive it, but keep an eye out for any puddles under the car.

Re: Strange coolant leak

An alternative is to go to auto store and rent their radiator tester. It has a pump and a gauge if the system is leaking it will lose pressure. Allows you to poke around with system under pressure but engine still cold.

Modst auto stores lend them for free.

Good luck
