stock timing at idle
stock timing at idle
I put a reman. optispark on and I have a 94 z28 6speed, its pretty stock accept for the k&n. I checked it on a scanner and it says the timing is 20 deg adv. at idle which is 800rpm, is this correct? because I think I put the optispark on one spline off possibly, I don't know how since the spline is keyed, its soo hard to put it on, it really seemed to go on correctly and flush to the engine, but the car is running horrbly, like no power at all.. bogs down, overheats etc..
Re: stock timing at idle
I did change the plugs and wires and bled the cooling system, but when I plugged in the scanner no codes came up, and the live scan with the car running says the timing is 20 at idle and was wondering if this is correct. The car runs bad, like bogs down when I try to accelerate, especially when the car gets hot, it overheats also.
Re: stock timing at idle
so nobody knows what a stock camaro's timing hovers around at idle? according to my scanner its 20 at 800 rpm. Is my new reman optispark off by a spline tooth? I don't know how that would be possible with a notched spline, since it can only go on one way and seemed to go on correctly. I just want to make sure before I have to tear it all down for the 3rd time.. thats a full days work for me..yikes
Re: stock timing at idle
Your timing does not sound like it is abnormal, but timing is dependent on MAP too, so there is no way to tell with the information you gave. Anyway, what the computer provides for timing would not be affected even if you put the opti on wrong. So looking at the timing on a scanner is not going to tell you anything about opti position.
You should also give people more than an hour or so to respond before saying "so nobody knows...".

You need to be more patient.... not everyone who knows the answer is online 24/7, particularly between the hours of 6:00-8:00am.
Re: stock timing at idle
My earlier response on the "Computer...." forum. This is why its not a good idea to scatter gun the same question in multiple forums.
At 800rpm idle, the stock programming timing advance on an LT1 is in the range of 18-22 degrees, so what you are seeing is normal. When you hook up a scanner, it reads what advance the PCM is calling for. It has no way of knowing what the actual timing is, nor would what the scanner shows change if the Opti was indexed incorrectly to the splined driveshaft.
Re: stock timing at idle
sorry im just new to the message board and sort of had ants in my pants. Thanks for the info though, I can't seem to figure out why the car overheats still and lacks power, the idle sounds fine though..really strange
