Stock radiator good to..HP??

Is the stock radiator sufficent to cool a 383 stroker around 650hp using the factory fans and a high flowing elec water pump?

For what kind of driving? with my heads/cam car, teh stocker wasn't even close to enough on a road coarse, I could only go 1/2 the whole time, and my temps were still in the 230's.

Thats cuz ur dad likes to hit stuff in the road and damage the stocker :-) , haha.. My stocker rad held up fine till I did a stupidly big cam and ran it untuned... But 97s + have different radiators then 93 to 96..

He damaged the bumper, not radiator, the stock radiator went on its own.

Re: Stock radiator good to..HP??

my Lt1 started to get warm after I got my supercharger....

but I also have a 1400deg EGT to deal with so it gets warm..

I have a griffin in it now and it runs close to stock temps....a little lower on the hwy and out of boost

My dads Chevelle is still running the factory radiator in his 500hp big block so I think our higher technology radiators can handle a little more hp. His stays nice and cool around 170 while cruising and no more than 225-230 in stop and go traffic.

Improve airflow through the stocker and you see much lower temps. Open up front of the car, lower the airdam, like that. try those things before spending 600+ on a radiator.

Chevelle is no comparison, don't bring it into this discussion.

Newer radiators keep getting thiner, for example the 93-96 LT1 F-bodys had a 1.375" core radiator, the 97's like mine came with a 1", and the LS1's came with a .9" thick core.

I have a 95, 450rwhp, electric wp, and 160 thermo. fans come on early. I have been driving in stop and go traffic when its 102 degrees and the air was so steamy I was sweating my *** off with the vent on full bore. The motor didn't get hotter than 190 degrees. I was very pleased. So, dont throw out your stock radiator just yet my friend! Oh, and I have pacesetter long tube headers, the under hood temps get pretty roasty!

Re: Stock radiator good to..HP??

I am pushing 420rwhp and on the road my temps run 175 to 180 no traffic, and about 195-200 traffic. However, when on the track it warms to 210+. I did not get many laps. I stayed in 2nd and 3rd gears, top speed was about 70. Not much cooling going on at that speed and 6000rpm. Probably need a new larger radiator.

PS Running the stock water pump.
