Stock LT1 idle speed...
Stock LT1 idle speed...
My car idles at about 1000 rpm, (it's a stock '97 M6 Z/28)...whether it's hot, cold or anything in between...The car runs perfect otherwise though. First off, is this normal? I just feel it's a bit high and my guess is the guy who had it before me maybe had the dealer turn it up to smooth things out a bit. So, can I lower the idle myself? Is there a manual idle adjustment or is it something that you need to get a tune to adjust? Thanks in advance
Re: Stock LT1 idle speed...
That is kind of high, but before anything else I'd take off your TB (youll need a new gasket) and clean it out, including the IAC (Idle Air Control) Sensor on the bottom. Run it after that for a little while and it might help. If not I'd have it programmed down. I wouldnt mess with the thottle body cables.

Re: Stock LT1 idle speed...
Well, actually when I first start it, it idles @ like 1100 rpm...Then once it's warmed up it like drops to 1000...Anyway though, the car only has 24,000 miles on it. Do you really think that the IAC sensor could be gunked on such a low miles car? I did take the intake elbow off about 2 months ago just to take a look at the TB and as I remember it, it was pretty clean.
Re: Stock LT1 idle speed...
Its not necessaryly junked. Alot of times it just needs cleaned up. The front of the TB is generally clean anyways. Its behind and beneath where it gets real dirty. I just cleaned mine yesterday.

Re: Stock LT1 idle speed...
Thanks for all the replies everyone...I haven't checked the IAC yet visually and I don't have a scanner
I don't have a new gasket for the TB if I take it off, so I'd like to avoid that if at all possible. Is it worth the trouble of trying to take IAC out w/o taking off the TB? If it's not I guess I'll just wait until I can get a new gasket to do it.

Re: Stock LT1 idle speed...
The stock programming for the M6 is 800rpm, fully warmed up. And, it isn't unusual for the stock tach to indicate 100-200rpm above the actual idle speed. To see what your actual idle speed is, put a scanner on it and read the rpm directly off the PCM. You may not even have a problem.
Comparing it to an A4 is pointless, since the stock A4 programming is 550rpm in gear and 650rpm in neutral.
