Fleetwood is indead a d-body, it has a longer wheelbase(7" in the wheels 13" overall) than the other hence the seperate designation.

I am what you might call active on a couple Imapala forums. I drop in here to see what you guys are doing since we share a basic engine and transmission. Actually my car came with an L99 so I HAD a 7.625 axle like you guys too, but I chucked that after the LT1 swap. Don't you wish you could just throw a 8.5 from a LT1 b-body under your car .

Y-body= Corvette (alum)
F-body= Camaro + Firebird (alum)
B-body= Caprice + Impala + Roadmaster (iron)
D-body= Fleetwood (still unconfirmed tho) ?? possible B-body (iron)

Looks like the Fleetwood is indeed a D-body.

GM Body Type: D-Body (Note that the D-cars are really a slightly stretched version of the B-car and are virtually identical except for the wheelbase.)

A 265 cubic inch 4.3L LT1, smaller bore and stroke but all the external stuff is the same. Really it is it's own block, heads, crank, rods(5.940") and pistons, but the manifolds, wiring, opti, ater pump, tin and such are all the same. It was the base engine in the 94-96 Caprice only, most Chevy dealers will say the 4.3 was only ever a V6 but they would be wrong. When I had that thing I had a heck of a time getting the counter goon at the parts store to hand over 8 plugs instead of 6. It was a good little motor a bit torque challenged as one might expect but OK with 200hp 245 ft.lbs. I think it would have been perfect instead of the V6 in the base f-bodies, I could touch 30mpg if I drove sensibly. After I swapped it out I tore it apart and found crosshatch in all cylinders that was 110K.
