Stock Exhaust, No Muffler

What do you guys think of a stock LT1 with no muffler? Do you guys like the sound? Will it give me any power gains or losses? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thank you.

it will probably just get you pulled over, i have lt's and the hooker cat-back and it sounds really good. I would go with a hooker aerochamber muffler.

Re: Stock Exhaust, No Muffler

I've done it.

I removed my stock silencer and replaced it with 3" straight pipe.

Its loud, but no louder than a decent sized motorbike.
It drones a bit at around 2000 rpm but that goes away if you drop below or go over that engine speed.
It cracks and pops on deceleration if you tap the throttle every now and then. It is a bit raspy towards the top end though.

As for power gains, I lost nearly all low end torque, pulling away takes a bit of throttle to get going but the mid range and upper power gains are noticeable and I backed this up using the G function on my GTech.

I suggest you simply remove your stock muffler and go for a ride around the block to see what you think, if you like it, stick a bit of pipe on the end of your system to clear it to the back of the car.

I second that. Keep the cat and it sounds fan-freakin-tastic.

Thanks for the replys guys. The local muffler shop said they would charge me $70 to do the labor. If i dont like it though, they will then have to charge me to put a muffler back on. But I really think it will sound good. Any advice for me?? Thanks

Hey golfer2410, save your $70 and I'll help you take your muffler off or you can use my sawzall. I currently have my muffler off from the I pipe back if you want to hear what it will sound like. btw I live in mason city also and when I'm not working on my car you can find me at highland golf course! I'm trying to decide on a quiet cat back to buy since my wife hates the loudness even though I think it sounds great.

Should sound the same as a cut out. $28 from summit plus you would get better horsepower gains with the cut out. Then you can just cap it when needed. By the way I have one for sale

I would just have a cutout put in before the muffler that way if you don't like it just cap it.

i kind of like the cut out idea, never thought of it even. how hard are they to install? and is it worth the extra money to get an electric one? thanks again for the replys.
