that touching the cables together is a big old nono. bad habit. there is absolutely nothing wrong with having the negative disconnected and doing your work. if there is no circuit you have no way to have electricity to do any work. if its that imperative to drain every possible phantom leftover electron-pull out the headlight switch and then pretend that you are starting the car.
