starts and then dies
starts and then dies
Ok heres the story. I have about a 1/8 of a tank of gas and had 235 miles on this tank I (all city) so I had to run it down to almost bone dry to see my record breaking mileage. At about 250 I had my car in the garage. My friends give me a call to see if I want to leave town for the night and and i was up for it and asked my brother to take his car. Not ever thinking about my gas tank I switch cars with him. I told him the first place he goes is better to be the gas station. He told me he got 15 gal into the tank. How could that happen if its only 14.5? N e way the car doesn't start after filling the tank. So he had it towed back to my house. It starts for a second or two and then dies. I can hear the fuel pump so I know it still works. Just put a new batt in and the plugs and wires have 16-18k on em and the fuel filter has about 4k. Any of you guys have any answers to my problem would be appreciated. Thanks
Are you sure you are hearing the fuel pump and not the air pump?
Put a fuel pressure gauge on the shader valve and look for pressure. BTW, gas supposedly keeps the fuel pump cool--you could have killed your fuel pump in your quest. Never let it get that empty.
My fuel pump just died recently--I thought I heard the fuel pump too.
Your symptoms of starting & then dying sound just like mine did.

I read on other posts that the fuel pump shuts off 2 seconds after it dies. I can hear a little motor running for a sec after the car dies. What else could that noise be if its not the pump. The noise is coming from the back
I don't know the answer to your specific question, but if you want rule out the fuel pump, you need a fuel pressure gauge & put it on the shrader valve at the fuel rail--should read ~44psi with the key in the run position (car not running).
It's the fuel pump. Even if you hear it running, it's not putting out. check the pressure when you try to start it.
My friends garage sees all kinds of cars with bad fuel pumps every day and it's usually after a fill up which was probably preceeded by a run dry.
We both theorized that the pump gets too hot being dry and following it with a cold fuel bath stresses it too much. Check the pressure. You'll see. Should be about 42PSI

if you can keep the car running by revving the motor then its not the fuel pump since you are getting enough fuel to rev the thing... could be the tps or something else perhaps? but at least you can rule out that fuel pump imho try to check that TPS or the idle air controller motor to make sure its letting air in when ur attempting to start the car
Check the intake also, I was having this problem the other day. Come to find out the under side of my intake elbow had broken up (from age I guess?) and was letting air into the intake after the MAS. It would not idle but I could keep it running above 2000 rpm. Simple way to check this it to pull the plug form the MAS and that other little one and see if it will start.
I tried to keep it running again and it died after 7 or 8 seconds. Just got more hrs at work and dont have too much time to **** around anymore so I think I am going to be paying for this dumb incidcent.
