Starting Problem!! Help!

alright guys, i have a 94' z28 with 136,000 miles on it, and ever since i got it i have had a bad starting problem. When i turn the key, the car will stumble for a second, sound like its got a dead battery and almost die and then start after a few seconds. it will do this when the engine is cold, warm, after all day driving etc. from what i know, the previous owner kept it well maintained, and ive had the car for about a year now. any insight into what could be causing this?

Sounds like you have a weak battery or your starter is on its way out. Have you checked the water in the battery? Make sure all cells are full. I'd start with that, then get the battery tested at a local auto parts store if that's not the problem.

Re: Starting Problem!! Help!

with the engine cold and the car supported on jackstands start the engine then see if the starter is hot. If it is then the starter is fried and drawing too much amprage. Another test is to get a multimeter and hook it to the battery then have a buddy start the car if the voltage drops below 9V during cranking then the starter is drawing too much amprage or the battery is dropping a cell.

Some auto parts stores can check batteries and starters with their diagnostic cart for no charge. I know the AutoZone I worked at did.
