Starting engine without tranny/clutch?
Starting engine without tranny/clutch?
I had a friend over who had never heard my car, and i had it open headers so didnt see why it wouldnt start.
I plugged the battery in, got in, pushed in the clutch (didnt wanna go at first), then hit the key. The starter made a strange noise, then i lost all power...no dash lights, key, nothing.
I looked under the car and the starter was bound up with the flywheel.
I unplugged the battery, then hooked it back up this morning and i have power again...didnt try to start it tho.
Soo is there any reason you cant start the car with no clutch/tranny? And any idea what happened when i did try to start it?

What would the clutch safety switch have to do with the starter getting bounded up
??? All it is, is a button right at the back of the clutch pedal that insures the clutch is pressed in order for the car to start, it has nothing to do with the actual clutch. Please tell us you had the bell housing on the engine to mount the starter? If you have the flywheel on and bellhousing and starter hooked up, thier is no reason why you can't start the engine by itself, thier is no need for the pressure plate or clutch disk to be there. You probably had the starter loose.
EDIT: Starter could also be making its way out the door.

From your description it sounds like something was locked up in the drivetrain or engine and overloaded the starter motor. With the car jacked up and in neutral can you spin the rear wheels by hand? Can you turn the motor with a wrench?
The starter is meshing with the teeth on the flywheel correctly, it is still mounted properly, and i can turn the engine over with my bare hands on the flywheel.
And yes at first the clutch woundnt go in, when i pushed it harder it broke loose and went all the way in.
edit - Car does not have the bell housing on. I dont see what it has to do with how the starter is mounted.

I found it.
When i tightened down the negative battery terminal, i just got it finger tight. When i hit the key, that starter meshing with the flywheel jared the car a bit, disengaging the battery.
I just tightened it down with a wrench, and the car turned over fine. Didnt try to really start it tho.
