Starter Problems (differences)

My starter has been dying for a LONG time, and I finally got around today to mess with it. Motor is a 94 lt1, starter was the original 96 vortec truck starter. I bought a starter for a 94 lt1 this time.

Get the old one out, compare it to the new one. Old one uses two long bolts, and the pattern is staggered. New one (lt1) uses a short bolt, a long bolt, and they are straight across. I cannot seem to get it to fit in there at all. They are both 153 tooth flexplates, and I cannot see why the new one will not work correctly. Anyone have a clue?

Trans is a 96 4l60e from a fullsize truck, along with the dust cover (if that means anything). I have a 97 4l60e from a camaro and the dust cover that goes with it that is going to be installed soon.

Are you sure you got all the years and the parts straight? I have a 94 and got a replacement HI-torque starter from summit 2 years ago. It was a straight bolt pattern. I just took a strole out to the garage and looked at the 95 on the engine stand and it's a straight pattern as well.

I am gonna take the dust cover off and see what is going on tomorrow. I think there is a straight pattern and a staggered pattern, and I was using the staggered one before. It looks as if the truck style dust cover is different too and that is what its hanging up on.
