starting problems?

just so you know i searched, and it was a big waist of time...

the starter motor on my car is just weak. i have no money for this kind of stuff, but would like to improve the starting times. usually it takes several seconds and it is aggrivating...

my remote starter is set on extended crank and still it wont fire half the time.

what i was thinking that if i just take the motor apart relube the bushings and what not and maybe even replace the brushes then it should regain some power right?

im gona check the wires going to the start later but im 95% sure thats not the problem along with that i dont think fuel and timing/spark are a problem either, just weak starter...

has anyone done this, is it a PITA or something not that complicated... i have a electric rc car(username) so im used to rebuilding basic brushed motors...

thanks for any information

What do you mean by weak? If the motor is turning over fine then the problem is not with the starter. You may need a tune-up to get it to start quicker.

Re: starter motor rebuild

really? i always thought that a tired starter would increase starting times because of less torque going to the crank?

so then other than the cables what do i need to look for, since it has the same starting length when warmed up and just shut off as it does when cold and sat overnight could it be a fuel problem, not holding pressure? - except when i use remote starter, it wont fire then so i go inside and it almost fires right up?

thanks for help

Unless it cranks slower than usual, the starter is not your problem. An LT1 should fire right up. I agree with the tune up, if it's been a long time since your last one. If your remote start is bypassing the priming of the fuel system, like when you use the key, that could be an issue.

Re: starter motor rebuild

the remote start doesnt crank the engine until the very last moment of the priming so thats not a problem.

the spark plugs are probobly the stock ones from factory, 85000 miles ago, which it says is good for 100000 miles but the gap increases which makes it requirer more energy to spark, so would that be the problem...

but besides the plugs im almost sure that all of the other tune up things have been done... i dont really know though. the fuel filter was replaced at dealership when i got it i think, the air filters were replaced when i put on slp cai, i just changed the oil two days ago... not much else that i can think of that would effect starting... the sheets in the glovebox say that the cap and rotor(on optispark?) was replaced a while ago...

thanks for help...

definetly change the plugs. They are cheap and it won't hurt. I would go ahead and change the wires too. Also, if those are the original plugs it probably has the original pcv valve....change that too. That should make a noticable difference in start times and overall responce.

Re: starter motor rebuild

... shoulda searched about starting problems, then tried that... just changed pcv valve and it starts pretty good now. not perfect, at least not the first time, after that its ok...

the old one had dirt clumps in it and all but still had a little of movement...
it'll probobly start much better once i change the plugs...

thanks much!!!

Re: starter motor rebuild

wait i take that back... the only time it started good was when i tried it again right after i shut it off...

there are little cracks in the lines but i dont think that would effect it that much.

when i try to start it most of the time when it fires up some times it starts really low like under 500 rpm and then the rpms have to shoot up to like 1600 and then slowly go down...

i wont be able to do the plugs for a while so i have to try something else...

what else can i try???

thanks...

EDIT: nevermind i am a moron... re fitted the pcv valve and it fired right up, when i put it on i put the tube going to the valve under other wires so it wont go in strait, it sits at an angle so still its not working right but ill fix today...

but this morning i refitted the valve and when i turned the key, after 1-2 seconds of priming i could hear the pressure builded up and fired right up

thanks much!!
