Angry Starter lasted 9 months, no warranty?!?!

So I pulled my starter out lastnight. I had put this one in 9 months ago when my stock starter kicked the bucket. My new starter ( http://members.shaw.ca/nrfarley/pics...r/Image008.jpg ) seen on the right in that picture now looks like the old one on the left. I called the place I got it from and they said there is no warranty on it if the nose is cracked. They say the only thing that can do that is if the motor "kicks back" or back fires when you start it. Needless to say I'm pretty pissed I paid $230 (got a discount on it when I bought it because a friend that worked there got it for me) for a starter that lasted 9 months when my stock one lasted 6 years.

Has anyone seen this happen before? anyone have any idea why I'm having this problem? I'm confused, I need to get the thing running today (push starting is a pain in the ***) but I don't want something that is going to fall apart in another 9 months. Suggestions?

that's $230CDN.

I just talked to an automotive electric place and they will replace the housing for $20 plus labour.

everyone says there must be something worng with the car. But i've never heard is backfire during starting, never double started, never heard a grind come from it when it was working fine. I only seem to have this problem when the temp. is around -25c.

the metals used must weaken from the temps. perhaps you shoudl try a different brand. or even a lt4 starter if you can afford one.
