Starter help please...

Anyone replace their starter soleniod seperatly? I think my starter is going. Won't turn over once it gets hot, then have to cycle the ignition a bunch of times to finally get it to turn over. I'm thinking maybe the solenoid is getting hot. Still may be the starter itself. Anyway, I called Autozone, PepBoys, Checker and NAPA and all only sell the starter and solenoid as a complete unit and want around $150. I can almost get a better aftermarket unit for that. What do you guys think? If I have to buy the whole thing, any affordable light weight high torque units out there, and how many teeth does my flywheel have. Thanks in advance. By the way, it's for a 95' Z with a 6spd.

Re: Starter help please...

Are you sure it's your starter?
Are there any other symptoms that you notice while trying to get the starter to work?
The most common reason for having to cycle the ignition a bunch of keys is a bad ignition switch or connectors. Cheaper than a starter, but more of a PITA, especially if you haven't dealt with it before.

Re: Starter help please...

I had a problem n my 95 t/a auto when i bought it where i had to turn the key to start like 20-30 times till it actually cranked. It would click click click all ay but no cranking. Replaced the starter and never a problem since.

You may want to look for an LT4 vette starter (96-97 vette 6 speeds had them) lighter and more torquey

Re: Starter help please...

Im thinking it's not the ignition cause it only does it when it gets hot, like after a long drive and then I park it for a bit. Think the starter or solenoid is getting heat soaked. It doesn't click, crank or anything. Just sits there and after so many key cycles, finally turns over.

To the best of my knowledge you can not purchase the solenoid only.
