springs for a gm 847

I was told the 918 springs are all i can use for the 847. Is this true? What about the beehives? Also is it required to go with a 7/16 stud and have the heads cut for the 918 springs? Is it required to run guide plates with these studs? What about lifters? Will the oem's hold up? Sorry for all the questions but i was just told this and wanted to clarify.

You can run 977 springs.
The 7/16 are used for extra insurance. You can run 3/8 if thats what you have.

The seats will need to be machined for these springs to fit.
Another alternative is the K-800 springs, these require no machining, but you have to shim accordingly.

Yes you have to run guideplates.

Get Comp R lifters.

Re: springs for a gm 847

I've had a bunch of different spring recomendations I wonder if I will ever figure out which one to go with. The local performance shop suggested the Comp 987. springs.I called Comp Cams and they suggested part#26918-16,but the guy was a total a**.If the 7/16 studs and accesories are'nt a must have I belive I will pass on those for now.Right now I have the 941 Comp spring, will upgrading the spring to accomodate the GM847 will require machineing the pockets?
Thanks.

I ran the K Motion K800 springs with my 847. Good to .700. Very good spring. A few others with the GM847 run these springs as well.

The only spring that I am aware of that supports the lift of your cam (GM847) and doesnt require machining would be the K-800's. You can get them from summit or jegs for about 90 bucks.

I have to give a vote for the Combination single springs good to .600 lift. GOOD to .600 lift, not bind at .600 lift. No problems here, making good power too, and lots of 6500+ shifts.

Would the steel retainers be ok with the Comp 918.'s?I been told to use the titanium but i'm not sure if I can afford them now.The part number that Comp gave me for the 918.'s is for an LS1,are they the same?
Thanks,
JE

918s will be fine.

My advice, buy the best you can, and never go cheap. Wait till you can afford it, then do it.

fstenuf,you got mail.

I definatley plan on going with the 918.'s I was just wondering about the retainers. If I can go steel then i'll have too.I agree on not going cheap but i've had my car in the shop for a while now and it has'nt been cheap at all, especially the $2500 Moser 9".
Thanks,

Re: springs for a gm 847

If the 918's go on a LT1 they have a different retainer, as the stem of the LS motors is smaller than the LTx motors. I think the part number is 787 for steels. They are light, even for steels as they are smaller, and actually wigh very close to titanium retainers for a standard size retainer for small block chevy heads, when using regular type springs. 787-16 is the steel retainer number for 918 springs ona LTx motor, 774 is the part number for 918 springs ona LS motor.
