Spool Locker: Posi All the Time

The auburn is officially dead. What kind of effects will having a spool locker do? Will it hurt my rear end in the long run? Will it kill my gas mileage? I'm a decent driver and I don't drive my car hard very often, and I very rarely burn out, especially around turns where I know this would be extremely dangerous. I'm also super-extra-huge careful when it comes to driving in the rain.

So assuming I keep driving well, and I don't annihilate anything, will the spool hurt anything else?

Any responce is appreciated. Thanks...

well it real dont hurt your rearend but it does tend to stress the axles. that you also get odd tire wear in the back. and forget backing into a tight spot.

How about Driveablity, and my other questions about Gas and such? I did a search on the board and found that some people love them and others won't even consider it a streetable thing. I don't really want to pay HUGE bucks for a better posi unit, but I also don't want to leave it in there when it's not doing anything.

I don't really care about parking and what not, I'm more interested in tread life, gas mileage, turning, and overall driveability. Thanks!

EDIT: I don't know if Editing a post does a TTT so if it does I'm sorry. But anyways, I'm leaving for a bit, but I REALLY need to know if this is going to be worth it or not, I need opinions from everyone.

Turning on long sweepers and exit ramps sure is fun.The car wants to pass it's self up.I have not seen a big gain/loss of mileage with mine.and be careful on roads with deep "truck" tracks, the car will want to pull one way or the other hard and you will be fighting the steering wheel alot. If all this is O.K. with you,go for it.

Why not buy a Torsen take off from SLP or get the Lockrite locker and install it in your present carrier then you wont even have to remove your gears or anything. I had a Detroit C-locker in another 4th gen and you can't beat it for straight line performance but to me for all around driving you can't beat the Torsen.

Not with the Lockrite locker you dont, all you do is remove the rear cover, c-clips side/spyder gears etc then install the lockrite in place of the side/spyder gears without having to disturb the ring and pinion. Go to their website and check it out, plus I saw an install recently on horsepower tv.

AH yes, I remember that install on HP tv.

Do they make those for the 10bolt? How about a mini spool?

Mini spools arent recommended for drag racing, locker is a better choice IMO

I ran a spool in my 67 Firebird for a summer before I bought a posi unit. The spool was more of a pain than it was worth. Around corners the inner tire will "chirp" kinda annoying especially around long corners. Can't beat it at the track though ran my best times with it, 1.8 '60 foot aint bad with 235 14's and a big block What it really comes down to is if you can deal with the little "inconveniences"

Yeah, they make mini spools for the 10 bolt. However, the more and more I thought about it the less and less I wanted one, but I need to do SOMETHING. My mechanic reccomended finding an open road where there wasn't much traffic, stopping, backing up at a sharp angle for like 3 feet, and then trying to light them up posi. Well, it worked. The car straightened out and then went flying in the other direction during my brake stand. Tried it again later, without backing up, and it lit them up just the same. I haven't had a chance to talk to my mechanic since, but what does this mean? Is it going out, or was my car just "limiting the slip" all along?
