sparks and smoke after intake leak fix

I did the intake leak fix and the car sat for about a week with the intake back on with the new gasket and sealant. I got back to finishing putting everything back together tonight. Gave it a test start and it sparked around the throttle body and top of the water pump area but it started. Then it began to smoke. I know its not oil. I gave it a few more starts and it still smokes everytime, no more sparks though. The smoke comes from the throttle body, the back of the block, out the exhaust and the exhaust manifolds on both sides. It doesnt appear for anything to be burnt. What could it be?

Check your ground connections - make sure they are not corroded or broken, etc.

Well as far as the sparks that should be a sign that the main coil plug wire isnt pushed in enough or it was wet and was causing an arch........Electricity follows the path of least resistance which would have caused a blue colored spark..... As far as the smoke that you are talking about coming from the manifolds it sounds like its just oil that was on them or maybe even some of the old gasket material that you scraped off..... But, I would check the plug wires to make sure it wasn't them. The back of the Intake could also be the same thing. How long did you let it run. The smoke could just be residue burning through the exaust from the intake fix. Keep in mind that I am a recent upgraded from parts changer to an Official shade tree mechanic so get some more opinions.....LOL

Could the smoke be loose connections for the EGR or air pump fittings? If you forgot to attach something, or if its just not tight, you could get smoke. When I removed my air pump, I got smoke from out of the exhaust manifolds, where the plugs were. I took out the plugs, put some copper RTV on the threads and put them in with my impact wrench, and it hasnt' leaked since. As far as the sparks, it sounds like you could have arcing from your coil wire, I'd check that, as well as all your grounds, as was said before.

update

i double checked all the connections today and they are secure. i started it up and let it run for a while. i gave it some gas every now and then and its sounds fine. smoke is now only coming from the passenger side exhaust manifold area. it also threw a code for the first time, 23. according to my generic book that could be; manifold air temperature sensor, tps sensor, or the mixture control solenoid.

can anyone offer anything?

thanks for the help

code 23 = IAT SENSOR (Low Temperature indicated)

the air intake is off the car so that might be that code. what book did you get that from?

what is the mixture control solenoid?

You'll have to ask someone else. As I learn new codes I add them to a spreadsheet that I keep. I pretty much just do my research on this board and then go with the majority.
