Spark Plug Wire protection ...
Hey all,
I did a search but did not find anything specific so here is my issue:
I have 10.4mm wires and I just installed longtubes and you guessed it I am now burning through my wires.
I looked on summitracing.com for wire protectors but there are so many and some that only come in pack of 6. (doesn't really help me)
Any suggestions on wire protectors?
Oh and I am not really looking to do the over the valve cover conversion but if its really worth it I will look into it.
Thanx in advance for the help

Re: Spark Plug Wire protection ...
Step down on the wire size and you probably won't have a problem.
Conventional routing with smaller wires is usually enough to prevent them from burning. I'm running MSD 8.5mms routed in the stock location and if you're good enough with looms and zip-ties there's no reason you should be burning wires. Again I think the biggest culprit here is the incredibly oversized wires you have.
But if you insist on keeping them, several companies make fiberglass heat sleeves for the boots.

Re: Spark Plug Wire protection ...
I'd get the fiberglass sleeves and then do whatever you can to tie the wires away from the headers. Look at each one individually and see how best to rout or point the boot so the wire is as far away from the tubes as you can get and figure out a way to make them stay in that position. In order for me to do that, I had to make custome wires or combine 2 sets to get the fitment I needed. But I've never burned a wire (on this car). and I have crap for clearance on a couple of them. Silicone boots are pretty heat resistant, but if they touch the header, all bets are off.

Re: Spark Plug Wire protection ...
I have the DEI Wire Protectors, and they work absolutely awesome. They aren't overly expensive and even on direct contact with the header, wont burn through. Also, even though they are 8mm wires, I run the Accel 9000 spiros. They seemed to be the only wires my camaro liked, which, consequently I went with their opti and ignition box. Love it.
Re: Spark Plug Wire protection ...
I used the fiberglass sleeves and thought they would protect even if they were touching the header and was wrong. Needed to zip tie each one and position it perfectly between the header tubes. The hard part was mine seemed to burn from the inside out. At least it appeared that way. I was able to bend the wires and could fell the inside as extra soft in the burnt area. There was damage on the outside, but didn't look like it would do what it did inside.

Last time I checked it was not that much more to go to OTVC set up. There is a company called cc performance that uses msd superconductor 8.5 MM wires and supplies the looms as well that just bolt into the valve covers as a package for $147. That is pretty reasonable and you do not have to crimp the cables your self.
