spark plug thread repair kit??

I striped out #1 spark plug hole right when I was finishing up my header install and i'm very mad now.. I bought a kd thread repair kit and was gonna use it, but it said in directions do not use with tapered spark plugs, so now I'm screwed....I work in a mechanic shop, and I called up every parts place we order from, even napa, none of them had a helicoil kit for tapered spark plugs...Does anyone know where I could get this kit from in the nyc area, or a different type of kit I should look for

thankyou

I used this one I found at Pep Boys. The head was off the car.

I went to another store and they said that the kit I have is meant for tapered plugs, and the one the shoebox shows the picture of is for plugs with a washer, the part number is 2125 and is made by kd.. and I'm not sure what I should, thanks

The Kit Shoebox shows renews the threads.. It doesnt change how the spark plug hits the head or seals.. Use the kit Shoebox shows..

Re: spark plug thread repair kit??

So I bought the exact same kit shoebox has, and put piston bdc so I wouldn't hit it with the tap, and I started tapping it and when I went in for the last time the tap hit the exhaust valve and chiped it, and 4 pieces off the tap cracked off into the cylinder, so I just pulled the head today, and the exhaust valve had a little chip on the edge...does anyone know how much a stock replacement exhaust valve would cost, and cleaned out all the meatal shavings and chunks that cracked off, was alot easier than I thought it would be, and I think it is a good learning experience...

please someone let me know how much they think a new valve would cost

and this is a tip to anyone that tries this method with head on the car, make sure the exhaust valve is closed, or else you'll be in for a surprise.

Re: spark plug thread repair kit??

The kit I bought is definitely for tapered threads. Heck, it's been on the car for more than a year! It does not renew threads, it replaces them with an insert.

Sorry you let a valve get in the way. You have to think of those things.

You should take the head to a shop to get a new valve installed, because they will have to lap it in for it to seal.

Re: spark plug thread repair kit??

well I work in a mechanic shop, or will these be a job that should be left to a machine shop that does engines, I would think it would be pretty simple, just use a spring tool and change valve, is that all that is involved..also would you happen to know about how much I would be looking to spend on buying one new valve..

thanks for the help, this all started from a simple 10 hour header install LOL

I don't know valve prices off the top of my head. You can certainly find some pricing online somwhere. One valve is not going to kill your pocketbook. Yeah, you can replace it easily, but is a new valve going to seal to a worn seat? That's where you need an automotive machine shop.

It was only $50. to fix the head.
In the service manual it says to put some sealent on the head bolts, what have you all used on your head bolts, cause I wasn't sure on what to use

thankyou

Permatex high temp thread sealant is what I used. Common stuff found at most auto parts stores.

I adjusted the stock rockers with the car running, I losened them up one by one and when it started making noise I would get it to the point right where it stops, then turn it 3/4 of a turn for each rocker....should this be good for stock rockers, and will they loosen up

thankyou

That will probably be ok for stock rockers. I would not tighten them any further, though you could run them more loose.

Re: spark plug thread repair kit??

ShoeBox,

I had a problem where the number one spark plug started to cross thread about 2 years ago. I couldn't get the new plug in. I bought a plug chaser and ran it through without removing the head and it worked great. It wasn't any deeper than the plug so I didn't have to worry about hitting the valves. I don't recall anything about a tapered plug. Is there tapered plugs for a '94? The chaser worked so well I ran it through all other plug holes to make sure they were clean and straight. All the plugs go in nice now. Just wanted to make sure I didn't weaken the plug threads in any way. I did this about 100K miles ago.

Re: spark plug thread repair kit??

Well so far it's runnin pretty good, I raced my friends ls1 today, and I had him first and second, but then he started to pull on me very slowly, he has a 98 z28 m6 with an exhaust and 3.73 gears (how do you think I did against him). right now I'm runnin open headers and no o2 sensors, do you think my car will be faster once I hook up the o2's
and connect the exhaust? I would think it would probably sensing false knock too, because these things are loud as hell, it sounds sick when I go wot
