Spark Plug Bum Rape?
Hey guys, I got my car back today after I took it in yesterday to get the spark plugs n wires replaced. It took em 2 days to do it and in the end they charged me $570! Is this a normal price or have i had my buttox penetrated by every mechanic in the shop?

The GM dealer in this town charged a pal of mine $300.00 to supply and install Delco copper plugs on his '97. They didn't have to remove the Y-pipe, which I would have done to fit my arms in there. That's $300.00 in Canadian dollars, so compared to $570 US ( about $900 Canadian ) that was a bad deal.

Well, everyone seems to get a different price, the dealership here told me they wanted $750, plus %.7 tax, plus I supplied the plugs and wires. So it would have totalled just over 1000
I took it over to the local speedshop, they specialize in f-bodies. I ended up paying just over 600, tax in. But that also included changing a belt and putting in a skip shift eliminator. So the plugs and wires made up about 400 of that. And all these prices are in Canadian as well.

I'd say you got raped pretty hard. New copper plugs should be about $40. Wires another $100. Do yourself a favor and pull your own wrenches. Hell my Jet-hot LT header install, with 8 new AC delco copper plugs, and my right 02 extended only costed me $450 . Thats canadian too. Go find yourself a new shop to take the car too, or send me your money

But that is way too much labor charges for plugs and wires. I'd definately dispute that.

Ahhhh...do yourself a favor and do them yourself! I can do all 8 of mine (granted it's not easy but doable with patience) w/o even dropping starter (but I have hooker lt's) in under an hour easy. If you want to spend a grand...buy jet hot hooker lt's (620), new taylor 8mm wires (50) or thunderracing otvc setup (100), and some ngk tr55's (20) or new platinums (50), and not only have new plugs and wires (a lot easier to do as well with the longtubes), but you'll learn about your car AND have a faster, louder, and cooler car ;-).

Well, they put on Platinum plugs and I guess OE wires (both $180 total) not that bad in my opinion. But the thing that was bad was the labor. It was $369 for 5.2 hours @ $70/hr. He said that was what the GM service book said it took to change them and thats what they charged me. I would have done it myself but I have been very busy latley I work 40 hr weeks and go to school at night so no time for changes. I went out tonight and I can feel a huge gain in HP. I had the stutter after 15-20 min of driving at 30+ mpg around 2k rpm and it seems to be resolved with the spark plugs so i guess its good.

When I bought my car, there was a receipt in the the glovebox from a dealership. The guy paid $600 for plugs and wires. They said $15 per plug. So they rape you for the parts price, then they rape you for the labor. At a dealership, they charge you for the amount fo labor stated in the book. So it might say 4 hours to change the plugs and wires, but it might only take them 1 hour, and they charge you for the whole 4 hours of labor. My cousin worked at a dealership and he told me how it works. He said the mechanics also get paid for the amount of time in the book. So if they can change the plugs in an hour and it is supposed to be a 4 hour job in the book, he gets paid for 4 hours of work.
