Spark knock on throttle snap

A friend of mine just got his 94' camaro back together. He has done a comp-cam and that's about it. The car idles rough and will stall after some time. The main concern is related to timing though. When you snap the throttle at idle it has pinging bad and will pull out timing. What can cause this or have any ideas on diagnosing it. Replaced Opti-spark, checked cam timing just to be sure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The ECm can't handle a cam change? I realize the power potential may be a little less, but it pulls out 20 degrees of timing snapping the throttle.

All I can say is...

I built a 383 with hot cam, etc... etc... and it ran awful, sent the pcm off got it back and it runs like a top.

Yorkie, I don't mean to sound like I'm doubting it. I just guess I thought the ECM was a little more flexible. Thanks
