I am planning on swapping the fuel pump today and I am planning on going in through the trunk. I was wondering if there was any pointers you guys could throw me that might save me a little hassle. also will i get fumes back in the car by doing this once I have closed up the rear hatch I cut and so forth?

My only pointer is drop the tank instead of hackignup your car. Do it the right way man

 

all i can say is don't cut into the gas tank. it's less than an inch away. good luck

 

All I got to say is going in from the top is about the best way to do it. It's quick too. Not counting the time to wait for my glue/sealent to dry, it took about 1 1/2-2hrs tops. I had a few sites that have measurements on them. I can't get to them now. Do a search in yahoo and you'll find them. Good luck!

I plan on doing my fuel pump install this week and will go through the trunk. people cut into there cars all the time. if it's big subs in the doors or in the rear. the doors shouldn't be hacked into because that's keeing you inside during a bad accident. so if people want to complain about the access panel, hacking up the doors for larger speakers is worse. and i know people with 12's in there doors.

But many of those people that cut their cars in order to fit big speakers aren't unibody's. Cutting any part of the body reduces the structural integrity of the unibody design.

While it may be a small square that you are cutting out and replacing, it is still a part of the entire structure. Not to mention the tank sitting right underneath, fuel lines, wires, etc....

 

If you want to make it "safer"& faster,Use a 3/8ths or 1/2" drill bit and drill a starter whole in the corner then get some good tin snips and start cutting out the square you will have to cut in diffrent directions then go back and trim up the sides for a clean look I did mine in 30 min. And on the structal issue show me one car that has had this "MOD" and cuased any damage to person(s) or property!

 

I was thinking about making a starter hole with a drill bit and then using my Dremel and cutting wheel to cut out the section to remove the pump. One problem though. When using the dremel and cutting wheel it shoots sparks out towatds the car etc.. will this be an unsafe consition while working around the fuel tank area. I know it's sealed but one spark is all it takes..... would it be a better idea to go ahead and just drill the starter hole and use the tin snips and than clean it up or ? ...............Thanks again guys!

I just put my Walbro 255 in through the top. I used the dremel, Yes sparks were flying and I was cra%^&* my pants the whole time, But it's done and whoever at GM designed this should be fired. I am not about to spend a whole day changing fuel pumps when now I can do it in about a 1/2 hour. I wouldn't worry about weakening the unibody, There are plenty of people who have done this and I havn't heard of any problems. I also have SFC's and am not to worried about flexing the body.

hell I own a truck and im about to drop the tank for the 3rd time in 2 weeks due to bad pumps from Advanced Auto parts. All stock replacement pumps unused straight out the box. Im glad my buddy works there he is going to take it back for my cash. Screw them Im getting a Holley tommorrow!
