Something smells fishy...or I mean gassy. And cranking before starting.

Ok, I've got two minor problems that may be related (like fuel pump problem possibly). First of all, when I go to start it in the morning (yes it has been really cold, and no, I haven't had a very warm day yet to start it since I just got it a month ago), it will crank over for about 20 seconds before starting. If I pump the gas (like it's carbureted) while trying to start it, it seems to start within 10 seconds of cranking. If I crank it for a few seconds and it doesn't start, then turn the key to run for a second before turning it to start, it starts right off within like 1 second of cranking. What would be causing this problem? I think it could be one of two things. 1) The security system takes a little bit to "warm up" and read the key chip before it allows the car to start. OR 2) The fuel pump is not pumping up enough pressure. Once it starts, it purrs like a kitten.

The other problem is that when I let it warm up for say 5-10 minutes when it's cold out, when I get in it, there is a noticeable smell of gasoline. When I drive it, it goes away. I'm pretty sure it's a gasoline smell and not an exhaust smell, but I could be wrong, and there could be a small exhaust leak somewhere. What do y'all think?

Thanks

Turn your ignition to run and listen, you will hear the fuel pump priming and then it stops after a few seconds. Which im pretty sure all our lt1's do that.

the gas smell i'm not sure but did someone cut a trapdoor in the trunk to change the fuel pump and not seal it up?

other people on here will help you better than me.....

Yeah, I always turn the key to run and wait for the fuel pump to pump up, but it still doesn't start right off when I do that.

As for the trap door, I'm not sure...I haven't ever pulled the carpet up to see if a previous owner did that or not. I'll look tonight. Where exactly would the trap door be in the trunk?

Push the back seats up and pull the carpet back. Would be like right in the middle ,a square cut.

Try letting it prime a few times before start. I would test the fuel pressure too and see if it leaks down quickly. You can get the tester at autozone and orieleys on their loaner program. Often they will let you test in their lot just by holding ur drivers liscence. I would start there.

Sounds like its time to check for a pressure drop. You'll likely need some fuel line shut-off valves to pin point the problem if you do have pressure leak down. Since you can smell gas too, I'd do a quick inspection of all the fuel lines just to see if it's something obvious.

I'll try checking the fuel pressure. It makes sense that it may be leaking down since it always starts right off the second time I cycle the key on.
