So, I go to the track friday night....

...and my times sucked. The air was decently warm...probably 60 degrees or so. And the car was missing at all RPM's down the track.

Here's the deal...

In the past week, I did the OVC spark plug wires from Thunder Racing. I also replaced the plugs while I was in there. I was positive that I crimped the center electrode on the metal contact for the opti boots correctly. My car ran fine beforehand...but now this. Could it be that I don't have the ends pushed on the opti all the way?? Here's the reason why I'm asking.

Before this...I had a best 1/4 time of 13.52 @ 101 MPH. BEFORE my headers, and madz28's programming.

Friday night....the best I could muster was a 14.29 @ 96 MPH!!!! WTF!!!!!
My 60' times were the same either time. Like I said, the car ran great before I did the wires. If my plug wires were not on the opit all the way, could it make my times suffer that much?

Under normal driving through town, the car runs great. No miss, no stumble, no nothing. But as soon as you put some pedal into it to accelerate, she misses...but not horribly. Almost sounds like a burnt wire symptom, but I have no burnt wires. I also have no SES lights on or anything. Anybody else experience this after a custom plug wire install? I'm absolutely positive I have the wires on the driver side of the opti on all the way....but that passenger side is a PITA! I had to remove the crank pulley to get to them.
And it was still very tight to get a hand in there. Any ideas?? I'd really rather not have to re-crimp all of my wires to find the problem. There's got to be a better way.

check your coil wire and all the others best you can. did you use dielectric grease on all the connections?

The throttle body was cleaned not even a year ago...so I don't think that's it.

Yes, I did use the grease on all connections. Although on the opti-end of the wire, its a little hard to tell whether or not they're on there. With the grease, you don't always hear the "click."

The coil wire was never messed with. It's still the original wire that came with the very first Taylor set I ever bought that was already crimped and so forth.

Do you have to put that grease on the wires or is it optional? I always thought it was only when you would get water/dirt up there??

You have a bad wire somewhere, check them all again. Pull the car into some place dark and while it is running shoot the wires, boots, etc. with soapy water and look for sparks. If you have sparks replace that wire or boot. Check those opti ends as well, I did a wire install this past weekend for a buddy and the wire would slide back through the boot, making it so I couldn't click the wires into the opti. If you don't hear or feel the click, they aren't on.

cracked spark plug! thats my guess.. did you take them out prior to putting the headers up? if not its possible you cracked one ever so slightly..

Edit: didn't read the entire post!! i'd look into the opti side of the wires as mentioned above..

Um, guys this was from almost a year ago. Look at the date in the replies.
That problem I was having WAS from a mis-crimped wire. I replaced the Taylor's with a wireset from MSD and I couldn't be happier.

Please read this thread: It talks about a review of MSD wires.

Quick question for you....When you were missing up top with the Taylor wires...Did you notice any smoke coming out your exhaust?

Thx,
Claude

Yes, my motor was missing all over the RPM band. It got worse as I accelerated and yes, black smoke was coming out the back. I'm assuming it was from the cylinders misfiring from fuel that never got burnt.

Thanks broh...I have a similar problem only I put the taylors (cut to fit) on about 2 months ago and the car ran GREAT for the first month now it running like crap....I will have to double check my plug wires at the opti end. I already check them all at the plug end.

Also, did you notice any miss at idle? Did the motor not run smooth?

The wierd thing with mine is that I am getting white-ish smoke, not black...

Thx,
Claude
