Snapped a wheel stud

It had to be the rear wheel stud of course. Just regular changing the rims off for winter getting ready for serious track sessions and I get to the last rim and, 3rd last nut and snap. It was tight but I don't know how it did that.

Couple questions:
1.) Can I still take it to the track tomorrow with 4? Mustangs use only 4 so I don't see it being that big of a problem. Just cover it so officials cant see it.

2.) What do I need to do to fix it?

go to autozone tell them you need a rear wheel stud, it will cost you less than $2.

Pound the old stud out and then put the new one in.

To get the new one in i tapped it with a hammer to get it started and then used an open end lug to pull it through the rest of the way, probably isnt the proper way to do it, but it was fast and easy.

And it will not pass tech inspection missing a lug

Did you have to remove the axle? It doesnt look like I have any room in there to do it without removing it. Was yours the rear or front?

Mine was the rear, ddint have to remove anything but the wheel.

Seems like it was a tight fit but i got it in somehow, can you rotate the axle to a position where it will fit?
I cant remeber how i did it but it wasnt anything special.

Cool. I will go pick one up from Autozone tomorrow. Take a half day at work and try it. Thanks.

Oh ya, what do you mean by an open end lug? Im trying to picture how to get it in. Thanks.

Its really easy to do.
Put the wheel stud in from the back, then try to tap it with a hammer using a long screw driver or a punch. It will be hard to do since you cant hit it straight. All you do is have to get it started a little bit. Then just get a lug nut on there and tighten it so it pulls the stud the rest of the way through. An open end lug nut is a nut that you can see through, like a stock one, which is what i used. If you used a closed end lug, they are usually chrome, the stud will only go into it so far and will bottom out. If you dont have an open end lug just use a bunch of washers to space it a so the lug wont bottom out.

Tried to explain it the best i could, hope it makes sense.

If you have abs and traction control, you are going to have to pull the axle. It's not that hard to do though.

Get the brake caliper off the car first. Then pull the diff cover, take out the bolt holding in the crosspin. rotate the rear so the other side of the crosspin is facing you. Tap it out a little, but NOT TO MUCH. then rotate the rear back, pry the pin out(i stick a screwdriver in the bolt hole, then visegrips when Its out enough) and the c clips damn near fall off. The fun part is getting the crosspin back in

I have ABS but no traction control. Will I still need to remove the axle or will I just be able to do it like Jchevy said? If I can't do it the easy way then I will jsut wait until the winter when I do the gears and TC.

Some people say they can, some cant. best bet is to see if you can get the broken one out. Mine was broken off almost flush with the hub, and it still wouldn't clear to get it out. If the short broken one wont come out, the new one sure as hell wont go in.

That is really weird that i could fix mine without taking anything apart. Shouldnt they all be the same?

My car is a 97 Z28 with abs, no traction control.

I guess you will just have to try it and see if it works or not, seems like i remeber rotating the axle to where the broken stud was in the seven or eight o'clock position. Dont know if that made a difference or not.

My car has a ring gear on the axle itself. It is so close to the back of the hub, you have to take out the axle and have the gear pressed off, then stud it, then put the gear back on.

Make sure you have all the studs on the axle replaced. Once one goes, the rest arent far behind, especially if oyu drive with only 4 for a while.

That is a good idea to replace them all. Especially at $2 a piece. I am going to leave them be for the meantime b/c I have a day at the track today and then one more time and then the car is done for the year. That is the only driving that will be done on it too so they should hold up to that. We shall find out.

You probably wont pass tech inspection at the track, my friend has failed it before because of this same problem.

It is a test and tune night and the lugs are covered up by that cover in the middle of the wheel so they wont see it. I have not had them tech me once since I have been going there. Not even on race days. Their definition of tech is writing a # on your car.
