Exclamation Smoke out of my Dash!

When My temperature reaches the 1/2 way point, smoke comes out of the dash board on the passenger side and my window fogs up really bad. I opened the engine compartment and no smoke seen there only in the dash.
What is going on????
Should I worry????
What is causing it? What will it effect? if not repaired soon what are other problems I might encounter????

THanks!!!

I don't know what the problem is, but my guess would be something with the heater core. Is the engine over heating? Whatever it is I would fix ASAP, definately NOT a good thing.

Heater core is probably leaking and you are seeing steam from you engine coolant thats leaking out.

i didnt think that smoke "fogged" windows, but i could be wrong. whatever the case, there should be a smell associated with the smoke. maybe you could describe the smell? never the less, i would NEVER drive my car if smoke was coming from the dash and i could not determine that it was safe.

Re: Smoke out of my Dash!

The smoke or fog smells like coolant. Whenever I turn the heater or AC on I can smell it through the vents. THe smell is stronger when the heater is on. I posted about the smell a few days ago and I was told it was the Heater COre so I guess the smoke is associated with the smell and leak at the heater core right???

How Do I replace this thing? How long does it take?

Yes your heater core is leaking, change it quick before you end up with a giant puddle of coolant where your passenger's feet go. It should only take about an hour, if you search around online you can find decent instructions on how to do it, I forget how long exactly it took me, but hey at least you don't have to change it outside in the snow like I did last year with my firebird =).

and the windows probably smoke up from steam, not smoke. If you want to do a quick fix you can probably bypass the heater core, I did on my mustang but not sure the layout on f-bodies. Ofcourse then you won't have heat (I live in florida)

Re: Smoke out of my Dash!

I dont need heat right now and i am pretty broke...
Is it just a disconnect and connect type of job or do I have to buy a kit or clamps somewhere to hook the lines up or can I use the same connections?

Re: Smoke out of my Dash!

If you pop your hood and look under the passenger side of the cowl you will see two tubes that go into the firewall on the right side of the A/C stuff. Those are the heater core hoses. If you pop those off you are already halfway done with changing the heater core. You could just connect those two hoses together and effectively bypass the core. But changing the core isn't that hard from here and they are about $60 from autozone with a lifetime warranty.
