Smoke Coming from exhaust
Re: Smoke Coming from exhaust
Every time I have had a problem with smoking or oil burning on a small block chevy it has been because of worn valve guides and seals. If most of the smoke you see is when you first start it, after it has been sitting for a while, or when you let off the gas and then accelerate that would be my guess.
Re: Smoke Coming from exhaust
That is exactly what it does. After it sits for a little while, and i start it, its a thicker smoke, then at idle its not really visible, when i rev it up and let off, it comes out a little more, then it goes back to where you can hardly see it. So you would say its valve guides and seals?

Still, the right way is to do the diagnostics. Then you can pull the heads and have a valve job done.....
Re: Smoke Coming from exhaust
BW Hunter is right.
I had, what looked like smoke on my 1995 lt1, it was sweet smelling steam, Head gasket gone. I thought it was oil...almost have my heads back on..The rear cylinder next to the exhaust was shinny clean when it took the heads off..Steam cleaned...

Re: Smoke Coming from exhaust
Yes. Going by your description I think worn valve seals and probably guides are your problem. When it sits for a little while oil migrates past the seal and guide. Then when you start the car, you see the puff of smoke. When you let off the gas, after revving it up, the high vacuum pulls oil past the intake valve seal and you see more smoke. If that is your problem you are always burning some oil, you can just see it better under those conditions.
If it's not causing any problems, such as oil fouled plugs (or you just don't like having a car that smokes a little), there isn't any hurry to fix it. An occasional quart of oil is a lot cheaper and easier.

Re: Smoke Coming from exhaust
the car does missfire a little every once in a while. like one or two popping sounds, then it stops. So I was going to pull the plugs one by one and replace them and see which ones have oil on them to see which cylinders might be getting oil on them first, I'm waiting for my compression tester and tools to come in. I had to order some tools, because I dont know anyone who has some. I really dont like the smoking, because something small can end up being something big if left unfixed. If it is the heads, I might just get them rebuilt, and get those and the intake ported and polished or upgrade the heads, throttle body, and add a mild cam. I plan on getting some long tube headers without the AIR connections but still retains the EGR, an rksport Ram air kit and ultra z ram air hood. I'm just trying to figure out the smoke issue so I know what needs to be done and what needs to be replaced, so that I can start ordering parts to upgrade the engine.
Thanks for all the advice.
