The smartest thing to do when the engine is out??

Hey guys I have 130Kmiles on my z28.
Me and my friend are going to take the engine out. The main reason is becuase we would like to replace all the gaskets, port the heads, get a cam, and tune it up with plugs, wires. We Would also like to add the longtubes while the engine is out (we are taking the engine out from the bottom). I want to hot tank the engine and then primie it and color the block red.

My question is, when the Lt1 is out, what components will I need to replace, My block is leaking fluid I think they are coming from the head gaskets. But ya, what do you reccomend. Me and my friend would like to assemble everything ourselves so we can cut down on labor fees. My friends machine shop said hell port my heads and intake for 200$ and give me high flow numbers.

The major thing Im planning on doing to the engine is basically heads, cam and headers, the main reason The engine is out is So I can make it all fresh again so it feels like new. My engine is very dirty and Id like the feeling of it all being brand new.

Things I have in mind are:

spark plugs
wires
Optispark
heads/cam
longtubes
Throttle body
Change all fluids

What else, I want to know all the compnents I need to make this a new fresh engine. Summit has a forged rebuild kit for 530 bucks includes pistons, rings, rods and all this crap, do you think I would need to replace all the internals? Or should I just leave it if all Im planning to do is heads and cam??? Please just tell me what parts I would need for all this project!
Thanks
Mike

smartest thing to do would be to change the bearings out. and probably the pistons as well. just get that summit rebuild kit.

You do know you need some specialized tools to assemble a shortblock right?

Another thing on the heads, thats kind of cheap for head porting. any fool can dig as much material out of the heads as possible to get hella high, high lift numbers. just remember that if your cam peaks lift at say .525", flow numbers at .550 or .600 are gonna do no good for you except to brag to your friends that you have awesome flowing high lift heads. Also keep in mind the importance of low lift numbers

With 130K miles, new internals wouldn't hurt. I'd definitely do that, freshen it up so it will last, especially since you're already taking the engine out.

Ok I see,
My friend said that I have to port the intake to match the ported heads..... does this also mean I have to get a right cam that will match the heads (with the correct number or lift)

If this is the case, then what should I tell the guy to do with my heads? How much should he port them????? Can you give me some numbers to tell him?

I would like to know a few things
1. What size cam should I get (lift numbers)
2. How much should I port my Heads (to match the intake and cam)
3. How much should I port my intake (to match the heads)
4. Should I get a 58mm TB???
5. Is it required to have more fuel pressure to compensate for all this, or should I be fine?

no need to port the intake.

you want to match the cam to the heads yes. just make sure your porter doesnt hog the runners out too much or velocity will suck along with low lift flow and the car will be a dog at low rpms.

get on IM my s/n is lt1guy95 we can talk.

most off the shelf lt1 cams are in the lift range of 500-550. no need to reinvent the wheel here.

port the heads as much as you can without sacrificing velocity and low lift numbers.

dont port the intake.

58mm tb couldnt hurt, however that is money better spent elsewhere.

fueling problems depend on how well the heads flow and how big the cam is.

just remember, the heads are where you get teh power from

I would change at least the rod bearings, oil pump and all seals.

And check cylinder and crankshaft measurements, if they are out of spec, I would rebuild the shortblock. Adding stress to old worn-out shortblock isn't wise thing to do.
