small wire at starter?

small wire at starter?
i was finishing my car yesterday and tried to start it and it wouldn't crank. i pulled the starter, has AZ test it and it was fine. reinstalled but noticed an extra wire down there. a small black wire with a small ring terminal on it, i originally had put it on with the purple start wire unsure of where it went. so when i reinstalled the starter i left this wire off and it cranked just fine.
so i'm guessing its a ground wire...where does it go?
