Im looking to pick me up a set for my 97. Do I have to purchase thier installation kit? Or will any gasket set work?
And do they stage 8 header bolts work really good, or do they need to be checked and tightened all the time too?
Just wondering because I dont wanna order this stuff and wish I ordered somthing else.

You don't need their instalation kit (if it's the same as the one that I ordered for my 93). I use the stage 8 bolts and they work great, I got the 1" ones and I had to grind the retainer on three of them to clear the primaroes but they work perfect.
One other note, if your car is the one with dual cats right by the header, then I've heard that aftermarket headers (shorties) are hardly worth it on your car, people report hardly any gains. You might want to do some searches ("dual cats", "SLP Shorties"...) to see what other peoples experiences are with them.
My "shorties" look more like mid length and they made a huge difference, I finally know what everyone was raving about headers being the best mod.

hmm... That makes me wonder. Cause I dont wanna blow my money away on the slps if I wont gain much. Should I go with the MAC's??
The reason I picked the slp's was people told me the 1 3/4 shorty is the best if you need to take emissions?

Is your car OBD-I or is it OBD-II??? That makes a whole lot of difference. If its OBD-II, then when you get emission tested, all they do is hook up a scanner and make sure you are all good. If you have OBD-I, then they sniff you. However, they can always be dicks, and sniff you anyways, just for the heck of it. I would recomend AS&M. They are mid lengths, and have emission hook ups. And they sell a kit that will allow you to use the 93-95 style headers, even if you have a 96 or 97.
Your right about the scanning part. I remember this when I had it done earlier this year. So as long as I have the o2 sensors connected I will be ok? Or will I need o2 sims?
I wana know about this, cause I may be able to pick up a set of jethot long tubes for a decent price. Can I run those on my OBD-II car without cats?
Anyone on here with a 96-97 Z or Formy/TA with SLPS or other shortys? Are they a waste?

I bought the Random Tech dual cat y pipe because the stock passenger cat went on my car at 35,000 miles (it was a rebuilt salvage and the warranty was void) and I didn't want another factory pipe.Later since i had the 2 cat pipe I got the SLP 2 cat shorties and together there's definately a 20-25 hp increase over stock and a deeper more balanced exhaust tone.
www.cheapexhaust.com sells a setup for around 400 dollars for 2 cats and pipes in the stock location. They use a more bullet like cat on the driver side but are not high flow like the Random pipe which flows 10% more than stock. Someone makes headers and y pipe for 96-97 with the cats in the stock location. Can't recall who makes those right now but it shouldn't be hard to find.

Here's a pic of the macs with the dual cat. It's small but if you enlarge it you can see the cats.

ls1motorsports and others have them.

In most areas you will still need to pass a visual inspection if your are OBD2. So if you dont have any cats you will fail emisions. I have the SLP shorty headers and i love them. I gained .5 with them and a K&N CAI. No complaints here at all.
You dont need to buy the install kit, just buy felpro 1406 header gaskets, collector gaskets from the dealer, and some stage 8 locking bolts and you are set.

At the time, I thought it was necessary, so I purchased it. I got my headers used, so they were a little warped, but still worked fine. Good addition to power. I haven't got it dynoed, but it feels like I got a real good gain in torque.
