SLP Dual Cat Headers

I just scored a set of SLP dual cat headers for my 97 SS for a really great price. From the research I've done it seems everyone considers them junk. I wanted to keep my car emissions legal so I thought these were a great deal. I am getting ready to have my engine installed within the next couple of weeks and I was going to have the headers installed at the same time. I really don't have any extra money to purchase another set of headers at this time. Are they even worth installing? I have heard stories that they tend to burn heater hoses and such.

They worked well on my car when I had them.

If you want to stick with the "emmissions legal" point then there are not a lot of options out there. The SLP is stainless and with a good ceramic coating they should work well. My only beef with them is the passenger side and the closeness to the heater core lines. If you decide to put them in and you are doing a head swap or a cam install at the same time you should re-route the heater core lines while all the stuff is disassembled.

Other than my distain for the heater hose / pass. header clearance I think they are a nice header and have served me well so far. If you are a true dual enthusiast then you can also fit two catalytics in the stock location as well with the SLPs. Check the sig for pictures.

Since I don't have to necessarily stay emissions legal, I may just sell these and get a set of Mac's or a similar brand for the 94-95 lt1. How was plug access?

I've had coated SLP 94-95 headers with Random dual cats on my SS for 10 years. They still look good and have performed well. The downside is plug access is poor.

I would love to find a set of the 94-95 SLP headers for my car. The more research that I do on the dual cat slp's, the more dissapointed I become. Even though the headers are coated, people have been complaining about burning up the #5 plug wire boot.

It seems that adding headers are going to be a pain in the *** no matter what.

To begin with, if you have no problems with emissions you should go with LTs. Bottom end, but good rep, are the pace setters, top end would be your Kooks, etc. Yes, you will have problems with burned heater hose if you do not re route the intake heater hose behind the other hoses and out of the way of the headers. Also, make sure that the EGR connection is oriented towards the incoming hose. If if is really out of whack, you may consider a cut and weld to get the right angle (bear in mind, that if they are ceramic coated, you will not be able to get a good weld, so always get the cutting and welding out of the way before you have them coated---if htat is what you want to do.

As convuluted as the SLP DCs are, they nevertheless should be vastly superior to stock manifolds. The biggest restriction in the LT1 is on the exhaust side, so you should try to lessen the restriction on that side, which may include going with headers, higher ratio rockers, at least on the eshaust side, free flowing exhast system, etc. JMHO

After putting the slp dual cat header against a cylinder head I have come to the conclusion that I am gonna go longtubes or at least mac mid lengths if my money allows. I did not realize how far up those primaries come above the valve cover. I have The stock slp catback with a hooker aerochamber muffler, 1.6 pro mag rockers, and the associated valve train components to increase horsepower and stability, so I should be okay for now. The car is going next week to have the engine installed and it is costing a tad bit more than I anticipated. I may just have to keep the stock manifolds for right now.

That is a very nicely done exhaust system!
