SLP Differential cover

Just put on one on my car with the drain plug. Has anybody ever had leaks out of where this extra plug is welded on (i.e. defective cover) ? I had a couple of drops on the floor and I can't really tell if its coming from one of the cover mounting bolts or a leak in that weld area. I had just driven the car once last Friday night after I changed the cover and oil.

Also, I torqued down the bolts to 22 ft-lb yesterday (Sunday) and drove the car around today (Monday) for awhile. I used a gasket and red RTV. Does it sometimes take a couple of heating and cooling down periods to really seal the cover ? I used Mobil1 gear oil and GM additive.

Thx

The oils in the rear likes to find it's way out, you may need to use thread sealant on the drain plug.

Yea, I did put the RTV on the drain plug. There's definitely no leak coming from there. Its either coming out where the weld is or from where the threads of one of the bottom bolts is. I'm hoping the gasket just needs to set. Worse case is I'll have to replace the cover (if its defective) and refill with oil

I'll check the garage floor tomorrow morning (hopefully no drip)

Damn, there was a drip on the ground this morning I know its a defective cover. Time to call SLP and have them send me a new one. Hate having to redo work that shouldn't have been needed.

I've had one of these covers on my car for the past 3 years, without a leak. It's a great help in maintainence of the differential.
It does have a small amount of sealant on the threads of the bolts, as well as the cover gasket.
I also drilled the plug to be safety wired. The last thing I wanted running around Watkins Glen at full bore was the drain plug coming loose.

Some people use RTV, ETV and the gasket, or just the gasket. I have onbly used the gasket in all of my diffs and I NEVER get any leaks.

Well, I verified a second time today that the leak is from the weld where the drain plug meets the cover. SLP is sending me a new one. I hope this one is not defective.

Sometimes ya just get the one that was welded at 4:55 on a Friday! I put one on over a year ago and it hasn't dripped a drop. I guess mine was made on Thursday at 3:15.

Did you prep the mating surfaces? I wiped mine with acetone so the gasket sealer could do it's job.

Yep, I cleaned it up good. I'm debating whether to buy new fluids or reuse the stuff in the cover now. Would be ashame to waste it. Whats a good container to drain it into for reuse ?
