Re: SLP CAI whistle noise

It's the throttle body, without question. Same thing happened to a guy I met at the track.

You are correct, sir!

I removed the SLP CAI, and fired the car up with no intake on (open past the MAF) just to hear it... the whistle/hissing noise was still there. I put my stock intake back on the car, and the whistle disappeared.

Obviously, the more restrictive stock intake has more noise-cancelling capability, as it's able to reduce/eliminate the intake noise. But the noise is definitely not caused by the SLP CAI; a more correct statement would be that the CAI fails to eliminate the noise.

Anyone have any suggestions as to whether or not I can do anything with the TB to get rid of the noise, allowing me to use the SLP CAI? Are other CAI's able to quiet the whistle noise? What about other TB's?

I've heard of guys drilling holes in the throttle plates... but I don't really wanna do that!

Thanks.

hmmm i never thought about the t/b making the noise , I know it sounds like the noise is coming from the end of the CAI ???? Unless somehow the noise travels out of the CAI backwards ???

Well, I guess I'm jumping to conclusions by blaming the TB. It could also be the IAC. The point is that the noise isn't coming from the CAI. It's just that the stock intake manages to significantly quiet this noise, whereas the SLP CAI doesn't.

ppl do say aftermarket TB's do whistle...i bet you swap your stock one on, it might solve the problem

I might try that. I'll let everyone know if I do, but it would only be a trial. If I had to decide between the stock TB and SLP CAI, or the 52mm TB and stock intake, I think I'd go with the latter.

I've checked everything for leaks and it's OK.

I guess I'm particularly sensitive to this noise... no one else here seems to be bothered by their CAI's and TB's. The car sounds sweet with the 383 and this cam, especially with the cutout open. I just felt that the intake sound detracted from it.

My car sounded like it was supercharged. It's no slouch, but I'd only want it to sound that way if I actually had a blower on it.

Now I think I over-oiled the K&N in my stock intake piece so I'm going to be cleaning my MAF next

Oh yeah, the stock intake has a lot of noise cancellation engineered into its design and why they pinched it up so much, instead of moving stuff around a little is still a mystery to me.

I remember the 1st time I looked inside the stock air-box tube.... I said to myself, "Air's supposed to travel through there!".

Yeah, some TB's are pretty noisy. My friend has a BBK on his 96 Vette and it is very noisy... to the point of being annoying.

Glad you found the source.

Re: SLP CAI whistle noise

Thanks for the help everyone! Once I get some track time in this year, I'll decide if the CAI's flow capabilities are worth tolerating the noise (that it doesn't cancel).

Re: SLP CAI whistle noise

I have a BBK/Edelbrock 52mm TB on mine, FIPK. After installation whistleing was very present. Mine will stop whistleing when under load, accelerating uphill in high gear etc. The idle air port is suspect. I will be touching up the port with dremmel soon to try to reduce whistle.

Mine does it under the same conditions. Please let me know if that fixes the whistling!

Thanks.
