SLP billet flywheel problems( owners please come in)
I am having a serious problem with myLT1 SLP billet flywheel. First off let me start off by saying that I built an internally balanced 383 for my 91z28.(my rotating assmembly was ordered prebalanced) Since it was internally balanced, that meant I needed a zero balanced flywheel and balancer. I was NOT able to use my stock LT1 flywheel since it was externally balanced(it had a weight on it) so, I looked around and found that SLP's billet flywheel had NO weights on it and I called them to confirm that it was indeed the correct flyhwheel for my application.they said yes. Well, it wasnt. The engine had a bad vibration to it and I had to pull it all apart after about 30 minutes of run time. The bearings where wasted and I had the entire rotating assembly checked out. it turns out that the flywheel was off pretty bad. The machine shop told me that this flywheel had a weight built into it. He said he had to remove a lot of material from it to get it balanced.
Well, I called SLP on this and was told that you CANNOT turn their billet flyhweels(like you would turn a brake disc). it will throw them way off.(funny, I never heard of that.) So, I said to them well, thats funny cuz it was in a 96SS and it worked fine for my buddy. I bought it and used it and it shooked the crap out of my engine. My question is to the owners of this flyhweel that have used it for a long time, have you noticed anything wrong after time while running it like a vibration problem at all? I dont understand how this flywheel can be sold as a replacement for the stock LT1 one but SLP claim that it is zero balanced. it dont make sense. the last time i checked, the LT1 engine was externally balanced in the rear to compensate for the newer rear main seal design. How can this flyhweel work on this engine if it isnt suppose to have any wieghts on it? Needless to say, I am now dishing out $1,000 to have this all fixed and lost 1 year of build up on my car. SLP cant get their story striaght.
BTW,I hope this is in the right thread

Re: SLP billet flywheel problems( owners please come in)
the first mistake that was made was the rotating assembly wasnt spin balanced with the dampener and flywheel that was going to be used on the car.
Re: SLP billet flywheel problems( owners please come in)
Well, the SLP flywheel I received was NOT zero balanced. If you look at the six bolt holes along the outside perimeter of the flywheel (which hold on the pressure plate), two of these perimeter bolt holes have more metal surrounding them (with drilled holes for balancing). And, oddly, these are in the exact same orientation as the factory flywheel's cast-in weight.
I'll try to upload a photo to the internet so you can see what I'm talking about, but the SLP assembly was balanced out of the box and ready to be thrown on the car. No machining was required (-factory externally-balanced rotating assembly).

Edit -- For clarification, No, I dont think SLP has the slightest clue about their own product. When asked, they even told ME it was zero-balanced, but I could look at it and tell it wasn't. It's been made to replace the factory flywheel, as it has the factory imbalance.
It'd be hard for me not to blame SLP. Their false product information led to the destruction of your bearings. Had they given accurate information / had you known it was not zero balanced, you wouldn't have bought the thing in the first place.
Spilt milk at this point I guess. Sorry to hear of your troubles -- I hope you get 'er running soon...

alex, I just picked up the flywheel today and those area you are refderring to are no longer on my flywheel. that WAS the are where the flywheel is balanced. i am calling Slp now and bitching a fit to them.
I just got off the phone with SLP and they claim that they DO NOT recommend cutting their flywheel as this will throw off the balance of it. They say that this is why I am having this inbalance problem. Its funny, I have never heard or read that SLP doesnt recommend it. The guy told me that the customer is suppose to rely on GM recomendations for stuff like that. He said that if the flywheel has been cut 2 or more times that I shouldnt be using it as it may break or something. WTF. I pay $400 for this flywheel a few years ago, had it cut twice since then and now it cost me $350 to have it fixed and rebalanced. So, if anyone buys this flyhweel and scares it up, you might has well throw it out cuz its gonna give you problems. Total BS if you ask me, You pay $400 for something and then thats it, if theres a problem it goes in the trash. Now I am gonna be worried running this thing after the guy said he wouldnt think twice about throwing it out after it has been cut.
