Slightly bigger injectors with the stock tune?

A friend of mine is having serious issues with leaky fuel injectors on his LT1. He's having horrible hard starting issues, and gas mileage has been cut almost in half. When he finally gets the car started, the smell of raw fuel coming from the exhaust fills the area surrounding the car. They're the stock 24lb-ers. He's having money issues right now, and can't afford a new set at the stock size, but he can get a killer deal on an odd ball size, like 25 or 26lbs, but he also can't afford to tune the car for the new size. I know the bigger injectors being used with the stock tune will make the car run alittle rich, but other than that will there be any problem with doing something like that? I've never dealt with injectors before, so i'm not sure what to tell him. Also, this would only be a temporary band-aid type fix until he can get the stock size injectors in a couple months. Any help appreciated!

it might work. i saw a moron with a mustang one time put 24s on his car w/o recalibrating the maf (which is what you do on the mustangs since the stock injectors are 19lbs). it was fat as ****. when i tried to tell him thats what the problem was the dip**** tried to tell me there was no problem.

Usually the "oddball" size injectors like 26.4 or 28.8 are LS1 injectors, which at our pressure flow exactly the same or slightly less than factory injectors. Those would "work" without tuning, but they would not be my choice of factory injector replacements.

By the way, the 28.8 would be a closer match.
Here's a good set for sale.

I too am thinking about replacing my injectors, becuase of a code 44 and a ton of parts thrown at it, and still has a problem when in closed loop at 65 in 6th gear, about 1500 rpms. Thinking of going with the Accel 30# Injectors, because of a deal that I can get. Will these work on a stock tune?

No they will not. I wouldn't even recommend upgrading to 30s on a stock or bolt on car.

food for thought, the factory lt4 has a little more cam, better heads,1.6 rockers as well as some other lil goodies and it comes with 28lb inj.my good friend has #75 97 ss, he added slp shorties,lt4 hotcam, mac cat-back,pcm re-programmed by ed wright, crane hi-6 the car was dyno tuned by mr.wright and hit 386hp 338tq and this car flies with only 10,000 mi on the clock i am much jealous .

I would be willing to bet my car his did not make those numbers with the mods you mentioned. Even if he had ported heads and LT headers it would be next to impossible to get that much to the rear wheels.

Is he sure the injectors are the problem? If the car is running rich it is unlikely the injectors are at fault. Has he pulled them out to have them flow tested? Hows the O2 sensor? Has he checked the fuel pressure regulator? There are a lot of thengs that could be causing the problem.
