Single exit vs. Dual exit

What if any are the differences in hp and tq between a single exit exhaust and a dual exit exhaust? Im not bringing up the old single pipe vs true duals but merely the single and dual outlet mufflers. I need a new exhaust, mine has a considerable amount of damage done to it. I just want something that is upgraded from stock but wont choke my motor when Im done with it either. Would the flowmaster single exit exhaust be fine for a low 400hp setup or would that be restrictive? I just dont feel like spending 600+ on a damn exhaust.

Single or dual doesn't matter...same hp. I had a flowmaster sounder nice but didnt notice any gains i would go with the hooker catback if i didnt have true duals. i think the hooker is under 250 bucks

Re: Single exit vs. Dual exist

There is a difference. The cross-flow design with a single inlet and dual outlets does not flow as well as a single-in/single-out muffler design. The flow difference can be significant. GM had singles on the TA for a few months in '98. They were not officially rated differently, but the single out was 5-8 hp better in real life. They went back to the cross-flow because the rear fascia had two cutouts and GM Marketing didn't like leaving one open. The other thing to think about is a single outlet weighs less than a dual.

IMO, if some of the exhaust does not have to do a 180° turn inside the muffler, the faster it can go out. Hmm...maybe there is a reason I have a TOTL.

Re: Single exit vs. Dual exist

The single exit would flow better, but you can get dual exits cheap. I bought my TSP Rumbler with no tips for around 220 with shipping. It has a real nice sound to it, but if you don't want a real loud exhaust, get a hooker cat-back. They are about 250 bucks, flow real well, and are supposed to have a nice tone. Check out www.ls1sounds.com if you wanna hear em. The TSP Rumbler is the same design as a SLP Loudmouth, but is not quite as loud due to the 18" dynomax bullet muffler instead of the SLP resinator style muffler.

I have a single 3" Hooker Aerochamber on my car and I couldn't be happier. It started out as a Flowaster single kit, but the Flowmaster sounded like garbage so I replaced it with the Hooker. The Aerochamber is HUGE, but it sounds great and is a straight-through design.

Right as usual. Flowing gases don't like to reverse direction. The interesting thing about the single out exhaust was that it was a normal 3-pass muffler with two 180 degree turns and it still had better power than the cross-flow.

The guys at flowmaster say that the SOR does flow better than the DOR setup. That is the setup I have on my car also.

Re: Single exit vs. Dual exist

I know what Shoebox said is the gospel, the less bends exhaust gas has to travel the faster it can travel, also the louder it is. I just brought this up in conversation with my friends and we all agree that there is a larger differance between full exhaust and dumped than there is deciding how many pipe you have coming out the back bumper. I recently went from a 3" Hooker cat-back to 3" dumped flowmasters....

Re: Single exit vs. Dual exist

Im mainly looking to have something still loud, mines like a damn 18wheeler. I can drown out a harley at full throttle. But I am mainly concerned with ripping off my tips if I stand it up. I know now with what I have I couldnt lift it if I was driving up a cliff but eventually I will have some MAJOR modifcations done. Thanks for the replies

By "stand it up" do you mean stand it on the back bumper while launching it? I would think that any engine capable of putting a Z-28 on it's bumper would probably NOT be using a single 3" pipe for exhaust. You do realize that you would most likely need to be running deep in the nine's to pull a stunt like that, right? I'm talking ~1,000 HP or so.
